I know that the baby will probably turn but its got me thinking about my planned homebirth...

If this baby stays breech there is no way I want a home birth. I will want a c-section (gave birth vaginally to dd1 who was transverse OP and it was horrid for both of us).

Can I have a scan at a later date to see exactly how the baby is positioned? And what is the best time to do it? 36 weeks?

it sounds awful, but cant the doc turn it round by 'external palpitation'? or are u too far along?

Baby is statistically likely to turn - Pupuce posted stats. But if s/he doesn't, I would go for a section too - was going to with DS2 when he was breech at (I think) 34 weeks. He turned though.

You can have a scan at a later date, I'm sure. 37 weeks was when they would've done ECV on me, had I wanted it (which I didn't - I know it can work, but I didn't feel comfortable about it for me).

Lots of bum in air scrubbing the kitchen floor for you - lots of optimal foetal positioning. Good luck!

My baby has just turned at 32 weeks, i think if it is still breeched at 36 weeks they will scan you. The baby can turn as late as 37 weeks. Dont blame you for wanting a c-section. Good luck enid and i hope that baby turns soon.

Ds was still breech at 36 weeks and no-one (drs, midwives) had even mentioned teh possibility of anything other than a vaginal birth - which suited me fine (however, I was going for a hospital birth). He turned at 37 and a bit weeks just before I was about to have a final check/scan.

The main drawback seems to be less midwives and drs are used to dealing with breech births for various reasons blah blah as you know well

FWIW, my SIL's sister gave birth to breech twins (now aged 5)!!

I second the bum up in the air. My dd turned at 37 weeks.

I know many friends whose baby turned at the last minute by my DS1 did not! At 39 weeks booked in for elective c-section to avoid risk of going into labour. Before going down to theatre they did one last scan just to check - so you can at least be assured right up to the last minute. I gave birth to a frog (squatting on his legs!)- so there is no way he was going to turn.

Good Luck and all the best.

both my ds and dd turned at last minute think they were 37weeks

Elf1981 · 12/02/2006 14:26

I did all the tricks to get my DD to turn, but she was a stubborn one. I had a scan at 38 weeks, had been scheduled for a scan at the end of the week but ended up with one early due to lack of movements, so didn't have to have to scan towards the end of the 38th week as was told unlikely to turn. I had a scheduled c-section, they scanned me just before to ensure dd still breech, otherwise they'd have sent me hope to wait natural delivery.

Elf1981 · 12/02/2006 14:27

oh, and three midwives thought that dd was the right way around around 32 weeks and it was only after an earlier instance of lack of movement (around 35 weeks) that I had a scan and was told was still breech.

I know you will think me mad but if you want that home birth go see a reflexologist...I was breech for weeks and weeks. Saw my therapist who suggested we 'have a try' at turning using reflexology. One hour later DS started to turn for me (very odd feeling, took about 4 hours in total).

Apparantly acupuncture therapists can also work on turning breech babies. There's some stuff on the web if you want to do a search.

Sorry for throwing in some of the nutty stuff, I will crawl off and go hug a tree or something.

gothicmama · 20/02/2006 17:58

36 weeks is teh time to get scanned if it is still breech depending on teh baby's position breech vaginal delivery is possible although in a consultant unit. goodluck I 'm sure it will turn
