I must admit that now i'm pregnant i'm not too fussed about gaining weight as i know it's beneficial for the little one to put on a certain amount, it's just that i'm getting married in July and wonder how much more room in my dress i may need compared with now, i'm a size 14/16 lower half and size 12 top half. Will i be showing, or just have put on a bit of extra weight all over? I know we are all unique, but any ideas would be much appreciated.

Everyone is different as you say - I think a lot depends on a) how tall/short you are b) how long/short your torso is and c) where you generally gain weight.
SO I always show early and by 17 weeks look v pregnant - as I am short, with a short torso, and gain weight around my tummy.

Most people are showing somewhat by 17 weeks, but it varies hugely AND it also depends a lot on what you wear.
That's my theory anyway... I would say plan to have at least a smallish baby bump.

Congrats on your engagement :)

I'm 17 weeks and and usually a size 10-12. I've just got a big belly at the moment, not a bump that's hard and bump-like but most definitely something there.

I think I could probably size up and be ok in normal clothes, although I haven't tried.

Is this your first? I've found that this time (dc2) I've shown a lot earlier than with ds so you may still be fine in normal clothes that are a bit more generous in your normal size.

With ds, I went abroad at 20 weeks and people didn't think it was obvious I was pregnant in clothes around in the evening time until they saw me round the pool the next day!!

But like you say, everyone's different!!

I'm a size 14 and 17 weeks Saturday, and there's no way I'd get in a pre-pregnancy dress! I've only gained 7lbs and it's all gone to my tummy (though I'm bigger than when I was when I was 7lbs heavier in fat Hmm )

If you've not picked one yet, could you go for an empire line dress that has a bit of breathing room?

Ooh, it's very hard to say as everyone's different. How far along are you now? Some people find that they have to load up on carbs to ward off morning sickness, so they start putting on a bit of weight straight away. I found the opposite, I lost my appetite in the first trimester so didn't put on any weight till later, and only really started showing at 4 or 5 months. This time (2nd pregnancy) I've had a nice pot belly since 3 months, have still only gained a few lbs though.

If you're buying your dress from a wedding shop, you could ask them. They'll possibly have had pregnant customers in the past. My advice would be to order the dress as late as the shop will allow, to give you a better idea of how your shape is changing. And aim for slightly too big rather than slightly too small, as it's easier to take a dress in then to let it out.

I'm short, about a size 10, and always presumed I would show earlier than most women, but I'm 18 and a half weeks now with my first baby and have only just started to show a bit the last couple of days. Generally I can fit into all my clothes, though things like skinny jeans are tight. My boobs are one cup size bigger but nothing else has changed. I've not been weighing myself so I don't know how much weight I've put on. I could certainly wear all my dresses and only the skintight ones would show a bump.

I was starting a new job and asked for my uniform size in advance and told them a size larger as I was 6 weeks at the time and presumed I'd be bigger by 14 weeks - but am still drowning in them!

However, I chat to women on a forum here who are due around the same time as me and there just seems such a massive variation. I ate quite healthy even through the sickness but some people just need carbs carbs carbs - others can't eat anything...

I think with a wedding dress it would be sensible to get it made bigger - aren't they easier to take in than let out!? (Also would make you feel a lot better if you planned to be bigger then wasn't than the other way round!)

Absolutely no way of knowing. You might not show at all or you might have a distinct tum and a fair amount of extra spread. You might be still in normal clothes or you might have had to reach for the maternity stuff for several weeks. Women are completely different in this respect, no way of knowing in advance. Also depends if you get very sick and lose weight.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 26/04/2012 17:35

As others say, it varies a lot. I went to my 20 week scan in my normal jeans, but I think that was the last time I wore them. I had definitely lost waist definition, so I was tending to wear longer tops and no waist-cinching skirts, but lots of my clothes were OK and strangers probably wouldn't have noticed I was pregnant. As Fluffy says, if you haven't already chosen your dress then give some thought to the style -- you can buy yourself a bit of wiggle room and still feel lovely.

Elena67 · 26/04/2012 17:38

You'll think you're massive. No-one else will be able to tell!

scarlettsmummy2 · 26/04/2012 17:41

I got married at sixteen weeks and had a little bump, perhaps noticeable to those who knew I was expecting but no one else really. I am a size ten and five eight.

EmyC · 26/04/2012 18:01

Thanks ladies much appreciated :-), I'm making the dress (empire line type) so can hopefully work my way around the bump, I'm 5ft 7 pear shaped, and mostly gain weight on hips, stomach, boobs, so hopefully will spread a little and not be too noticeable, wedding has been planned for ages, preganancy has come alone as 'the wonderful icing on the cake' feel very blessed, I'm 36 and it's our first.

I was a size 10 before getting pregnant, I'm 18 weeks now and can't fit into 10's or 12's now. Have been in maternity bottoms for about 2 weeks now. When I first found out everyone said to me 'oh you won't show at all till you're 6 months or so, esp because you're so small' that was complete rubbish and everyone is shocked by how big I am. I guess there is no way of knowing hun x

Naisy · 26/04/2012 22:57

I'm 5'7 too and was 72.5kgs per preg, now 69.3kgs at 17 weeks. Despite being thinner in face and finger (rings loose) I now have pregnancy pot belly. People who know have commented how I look pregnant to them now.

Others are either polite or can't tell!
