I had an antenatal class last week then my next four start next tuesday. But things that have been going round in my head are really getting to me.Please be aware they are really stupid questions.

first were where you when your waters broke?

Yes Im haveing nightmares of being somewhere like out shopping and this happens.

second what time of day did your waters go?

there was something on the telly the other week that said most people go onto labour in the night time, wondering if its true.

thirdly (really really silly) what does your water smell like and will it stain my carpets?

I told you it was silly we had new carpets fitted last week,I dont know why.

I dont want to ask people in real life they might laugh at me,I dont mind if you do,cause I know they are silly questions, but if you knew what else was going through my head.............you wouldnt be able to stop laughing.

My eaters never broke... For my two natural births the mudwives burst the bag of waters whilst I was in labour

SoupDragon · 26/04/2012 15:57
  1. When my waters broke, I was in labour each of the three times.
  2. See above :)
  3. No idea. See above
Dropdeadfred · 26/04/2012 15:58

Ha - midwives!

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 26/04/2012 15:58

I think most people's break when they are well into established labour, so already in hospital. Mine were broken for me by doc after about 6 hours of labour.

I know on tv labour always starts with a big gush of water but I don't think it's that common in real life, although obviously does happen sometimes.

I didn't notice a smell but have heard it is straw-like. Weirdly.

It's true that more people give birth at night.

Dropdeadfred · 26/04/2012 15:59

Eaters = waters... My typing on iPhone is terrible

fluffyanimal · 26/04/2012 15:59
  1. Both times in hospital (DC1 membranes ruptured by midwife during induction, DC2 naturally during labour)
  2. Evening/night
  3. I've no idea since I was also pooing and vomiting at the same time and off my head on gas and air.Grin
MissPenteuth · 26/04/2012 16:01

Mine broke about 4 hours after my contractions started, so about 1pm. I was lying in bed, had the strongest contraction so far, and they went with a gush. We had an extra duvet on my side of the bed which I'd been sleeping on for comfort. We just binned it Blush but it saved the mattress getting soaked.

I didn't actually smell mine but I think they're supposed to smell slightly sweet and, unless the baby has passed meconium, they're clear or very light coloured.

feedthegoat · 26/04/2012 16:01
  1. Midwife broke my waters. I was already 9.5 cms.
  1. My pains started (or I became aware of them) as I woke up at 7.30am.
  1. No idea as didn't care by that point!
tara0202 · 26/04/2012 16:01

My waters never broke by themselves, the midwife broke them when I was already in labour.

Siddhartha · 26/04/2012 16:02

Do you know....in 20+ years of motherhood I've never known anyone whose waters have broken in public. Maybe Its one of those horror stories that people like to tell.

I wouldn't worry, by the time you're in labour all your dignity will have gone out the window and you'll shrug off a minor incident like waters breaking Smile

tightwad · 26/04/2012 16:03

Dr broke mine in hospital. I was already in labour, in hospital.
Dont smell, straw coloured (if all is ok)
Started in the morning after induction.

luckysocks · 26/04/2012 16:03

Mine broke as I entered transition, in hospital.

I still worry about them breaking this time at work, though!

ilovedjasondonovan · 26/04/2012 16:04

  1. DD1 - at home. Spontanious, no inkling I was about to go into labour a week early.
DD2 - waters didn't break until she was born

  2. DD1 - 10pm
    DD2 - 8:30pm

  3. No idea. DD1's were trickling out for a couple of hours then gushed out over the kitchen floor. DH cleared up for me.
DD2 - surprise home birth, everything ended up on the bathroom floor when DD2 came out and was caught by DH (but don't worry about very quick 2nd labours if this is your first DC Smile. hadn't even had a show before.

Try not to worry about the birth - your body is an amazing machine that will know what to do itself. If you're worried about your waters breaking somewhere, just keep lots of towels around the place just incase.

DilysPrice · 26/04/2012 16:04

Midwife broke mine both times. I've never heard of them breaking in public, not even on Mumsnet.

thedogwalker · 26/04/2012 16:05

My labour started at 5.30 pm and I went to hospital by 7 pm, being first child and worried I wouldn't get there in time. Waters didn't break until 10 pm ish and as I was having a mobile birth, my waters were all over my feet and the labour room floor. Not that I minded by that time. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's all natural and part of the whole plan. It's just not worth worrying about, they will break when they are ready to and there is nothing you can do to stop it. You can buy plastic sheeting etc for your bed etc but apart from that, just chill and relax.

And there is no silly question, we have all been there and worried over things, so ask away, that's what we are all here for Smile

porolli · 26/04/2012 16:05

I have 3 children. My waters broke before labour each time. Two in the middle of the night, one when watching tv in the evening. It wasn't dramatic though - the one I was awake for, I heard a loud pop and then a trickle started. I had to wear heavy pads and sat on the loo to let it run out but it didn't 'burst' everywhere. It was odourless as far as I remember.

FundusCrispyPancake · 26/04/2012 16:06

I started having contractions at 3am.

No idea when my waters went because I had a water birth.

I was also paranoid that they would go at home - I had new carpets and a new mattress! I had towels and mattress protectors everywhere Grin

blueberryboybait · 26/04/2012 16:07

DD1 my waters were broken as part of induction. Laboured from 10pm until DD was born at 5am
DD2 my waters never broke she was born in her intact sac. started labour at about 1.30am Dd2 born at 3 am

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2012 16:07

Mine broke in the kitchen on the tiled floor, about 3 hours before ds was born. With dd, the midwife broke them

simperingsally · 26/04/2012 16:09

mine didn't break either. started contractions at 10pm dd was born at 11.
midwife broke mine in hospital.

iloveholidays · 26/04/2012 16:10

My waters broke with both my DCs before labour started. DD1 waters broked at 4am-ish. I'd been weirdly wide awake since 2:30am. Gentle constant trickle, contractions started at midday.

DD2 waters broke at midnight, contractions started on way to hospital 10 minutes later. DD2 was breech so straight in for a section.

I think it more often than not happens when relaxed.

Spiritedwolf · 26/04/2012 16:10

You may as well ask your other questions, if people here laugh you can't hear them, and the questions you've asked so far aren't silly.

I'm pregnant with my first, so can't answer. What you can do if you are worried that your waters will break in your bed because of the night labour thing is get a waterproof mattress protector, someone the other day mentioned a alternative as sheets designed to protect things whilst you are decorating - dust sheet things that are fabric oneside and plastic on the bottom.

You'll probably have some warning that they may go though, as many people seem not to have their waters break until they are already having contractions - sometimes well into labour. The waters breaking as first sign of imminent birth trope seen in movies and TV isn't the norm.

Would love to hear more answers to your 'silly' questions though, you might have thought of stuff that hasn't occured to me. First time mum solidarity! Grin

scrablet · 26/04/2012 16:10

No waters breaking either time.

(Well MW broke for DD1 but obv in hosp then, so no embarrassing moment).

Are you scared OP?Please don't worryGrin

lemonpoppyseed · 26/04/2012 16:11
  1. At home. I was lying in bed, trying to breathe through each contraction. I felt a pop, and then they broke.
  1. 11:30 a.m. I'd been having contractions since 5:30 a.m. -ish. (DS was born at 4:45 p.m.)
  1. I can't remember them having a smell, and as far as I recall, it just looked like a clear liquid. I didn't clear it up - lucky DH got that job :)

And, as above, I have never met anyone in RL whose waters have broken in public...

Seona1973 · 26/04/2012 16:11
  1. with dd I had my waters broken in hospital as part of my induction as I was overdue; with ds they went in the middle of the night while I was in bed - thank god for the waterproof mattress protector that saved the mattress from a soaking!

  2. as above

  3. it didnt seem to smell and it never got on the carpet as I waddled from the bed to the bathroom and most got contained by the bedsheet/mattress protector combo.
