I had an antenatal class last week then my next four start next tuesday. But things that have been going round in my head are really getting to me.Please be aware they are really stupid questions.

first were where you when your waters broke?

Yes Im haveing nightmares of being somewhere like out shopping and this happens.

second what time of day did your waters go?

there was something on the telly the other week that said most people go onto labour in the night time, wondering if its true.

thirdly (really really silly) what does your water smell like and will it stain my carpets?

I told you it was silly we had new carpets fitted last week,I dont know why.

I dont want to ask people in real life they might laugh at me,I dont mind if you do,cause I know they are silly questions, but if you knew what else was going through my head.............you wouldnt be able to stop laughing.

OP if it helps, I've read this and thought 'oh those are really good questions!' Smile

Midwife broke mine for both my pregnancies at 9cm dilated ( I had quick labours).

My neighbour's broke in the queue in the post office. She was well annoyed as she was nearly at the front of the queue.

ffnorm · 26/04/2012 19:58

My water broke at 9am,blowing my nose in the bathroom Grin no contractions,so went in to be examined - midwife said to go away for a hour and come back for more monitoring. We decided to go to Macdonalds across from the hospital. After eating,I stood up and had another gush of water, down my leg and into my shoe Grin hasty exit from McD's holding my friends giant John Lewis shopping bag in front of me to cover the look of having peed myself...

Am 33 weeks with my 2nd,so will see what happens this time...

I wouldn't think it would stain carpet but has a fairly destinctive smell.

AceOfBase · 26/04/2012 20:01

Ds my waters broke in the shopping centre at 5.45 pm. Dd was at home on my living room carpet at 5.30 am. Both were v early. No smell and no stain either. Most people have contractions and are already in established labour before their waters go.

wearymum200 · 26/04/2012 20:08

I bought a mattress protector for the bed just in case. Midwife broke waters for ds1, about 20 mins before he was born. Dd2 was born in a complete sac with waters intact. Both times I started contracting in wee small hours (down to our distant ancestors being safer if birth in the hours of darkness), ds born at teatime, dd2 at lunchtime

lizzywig · 27/04/2012 09:45

I was in bed when my waters broke, it was 3am and I woke up needing a wee. It was only a trickle & I wasn't even sure (that sounds daft now!) so I went back to sleep after I'd been to the loo but then the same thing happened an hour later, another little trickle, then I had my show and then I went into labour at about 4:30am and off to the hospital we went. Luckily I'd put a waterproof sheet on the bed just in case!! I like you was very anxious about when and where it would happen.

Being worried about them going when you're out shopping is normal I think, I certainly felt like that. However the amount of time you are out of the house (or off the sofa!) on the lead up to the big day is minimal so I wouldn't worry about it. I do have a friend (honestly this is true) who went into labour when she was out, she'd made a quick dash to toys r us and it was at the time of the floods (about five years ago) in our area. She'd got there fine as there wasn't much rain but by the time she left the rain was coming down hard and the busses had been diverted as the area she was going through was notorious for flooding. So she decided to walk back and as the water around her was getting deeper all of a sudden her waters broke. She just carried on, she wasn't in labour, she just got herself home and then calmly said to her DP "it's time to go to the hospital". So 1) minimise your out of house time and 2) IF it does happen then just stay calm because it will be ok.

MarySA · 27/04/2012 09:51

I was exactly the same as you when expecting DD. I imagined all sorts of scenarios of dramatic water breaking in the middle of town. Personally, I don't think it's statistically that likely. But it happens such a lot in books that I thought it would be quite likely to happen. Mine had to be broken in hospital both times. I've never known anybody whose waters have broken in public if that's any consolation!

Dollydowser · 27/04/2012 10:07

I was worried that mine would break in bed. I bought a mattress protector (but never got around to putting it on the bed!). I woke up at midnight one night and just knew something was going to happen, so got up and waddled leapt into the bathroom where they broke. Don't remember a smell or colour though.

AnneOfCleavers · 27/04/2012 10:29

1 - In hospital by the midwife.

2 - In the morning but a bit of a moot point because the midwife broke them.

3 - My waters were a funny green colour because DD had poohed. DD was completely fine though.

TejasGal · 27/04/2012 21:04

Mine went twice! The first time, it woke me up about 5am and I managed to whip myself out of bed before they could soak through my pajamas to the sheets (quite a feat with SPD too!). I guess when I stood, the baby's head plugged them back up because when I arrived in the hospital's reception they went again with a gush. It quite surprised me, my husband and the receptionist who promptly asked me to take a seat. They had upholstered chairs; I declined. Grin

forpitysake · 27/04/2012 21:54

mine never went so can't help you really but it was interesting reading through the answers anyway. i was 5-6cm gone by the time i got into hospital and ended up with em.section so don't know what ever happened to them!!

there are no silly answers btw esp with your 1st - no-one knows what to expect and how it will be/feel like/etc. people can tell you but you won't appreciate it until you've experienced it yourself. add to that the fact that your experience will be different anyway and it's no wonder we can worry and ask questions!

this will be my 2nd and i'm asking completely different questions this time round!

good luck Smile

KitCat26 · 30/04/2012 11:12

DD1 went I was 7cm in the labour ward. (middle of the night if that helps). No smell, maybe a slight colour.

DD2 on the operating table just before they heaved her out through the sun roof. (morning but that was planned)

systemsaddict · 30/04/2012 11:16

Both times in hospital. First time, broken by midwife as part of an induction. Second time, no induction, she offered to break them late on in labour and I said no, they went about 2 pushes before dd was born and she was "born in the bag" - apparently this is supposed to be lucky!

Fiddlestix · 30/04/2012 11:16

My waters broke in hospital thanks to the midwives rupturing them!

I have never heard of anyone's waters going in public, I'd try not to worry too much! I've heard that it's best to sit on a towel or lie on one if you're particularly bothered towards the end of pregnancy but I think that even if I had done that they would've soaked through, there was so much water!

ben5 · 30/04/2012 11:21

ds1 at 2.56am just a small dribble not enough that a sanity towel couldn't cope.( this is what woke me up!!) No idea if it smelt, sorry. ds was born at 0712am on the same day

ds2 waters were broken by midwife and it was the most painful part of the birth( sorry) again have no idea if it smelt. I went into labour at 0226( you will be surprised you will remember stupid times!!) and he was born at 0452

revolutionconfirmed · 30/04/2012 11:22

Mine broke during established labour. I had had contractions for six hours before my waters broke with DD1. I had a pessary at 12pm, contractions from 3pm, really heating up by 7pm and my waters went after an examination from laying to sitting. The horrible midwife told me it wasn't my waters and I was urinating despite my jeans being soaked, the floor in a puddle and a steady stream all the way to the toilet. It was only after she gave me a sanitary towel and smelt it that she said it was my waters as it smelled like straw.

With DD2 the midwives broke my waters about ten minutes before she was born. I was 9cm and they were bulging so much it looked like her head according to DH. I'm convinced if they hadn't she would have been born in the sac, especially since it was an impromptu home birth.

used2bthin · 30/04/2012 11:22

1- at my parents house (where I was living at the time).I'd been having contractions all night though-it happened as I stood up. It went through my trousers but not on the floor, then I changed and put pads in and it kept leaking till DD was born-the only time stuff actually gushed onto the floor was when I took off my knickers to change at the hospital. I don't remember it smelling. just a clear liquid with funny tinge but the tinge was only due to dd passing meconium i think.

Pg with no 2 now so can't answer that but DH is worrying about our new carpets and sofa too so you aren't the only one!

GinPalace · 30/04/2012 11:28

I do know one person whose waters went in the supermarket but she has had 3 children and all have very binkers birth stories. We have banned her having any more as we can't handle the excitement. Grin

If the babies head is engaged the waters are often a tiny trickle at first (if they even break of course) as babies head acts as a plug until things start to move along (!)

Mine were tiny trickle in bed at 4am (Yes most labours start at night I believe) but the gush of the rest was an hour before delievery when I was in hospital and it was all over their floor so hahahaaaaaa

That said if you are going for home (as I am this time) I will be putting cheap shower curtains and sheets down so it is easy to clean up after (not my problem mind you, I will be having a cuppa and resting)

GinPalace · 30/04/2012 11:28

binkers!! Bonkers of course. Arf!

kelli10 · 30/04/2012 11:57

1-Waters broke in hospital while standing next to the birthing pool, was already at least 8cm so knew they'd be going before too long.
2-Went at 1pm and had been in established labour since approx 9am
3-Clear with a bloody plug in them, it hadnt come away at all before then.

theressomethingaboutmarie · 30/04/2012 12:03

Mine broke in a Starbucks in the middle of a Sainsburys. It wasn't a big gush, more of a pop. I was determined to not get home from having my baby to be faced with empty cupboards so insisted upon carrying on with the food shopping. I waddled around the shop with my jeans getting progressively wetter (I really didn't care). DH was desperate for me to get to hospital (I'd recently been discharged for pre-eclampsia) but I insisted upon taking all shopping home and unpacking it Grin

theressomethingaboutmarie · 30/04/2012 12:04

Oh, I started having contractions about 10 hours later and then had DD in hospital four hours after arriving (speed due to pre-eclampsia).

GinPalace · 30/04/2012 12:08

theressomething

Wonder how many people clocked your spreading patch and thought it was a Little Britain sketch gone wrong. Arf!

insisted on finishing! I wouldn't argue with you on a dark night in an alley. Grin

boredandrestless · 30/04/2012 12:12

My waters had to be broken by the midwife when I went in to be induced at 2 weeks late. Don't recall a smell, and as we knew they were about to break I vaguely recall the midwife putting something there ready for said waters breaking.

theressomethingaboutmarie · 30/04/2012 12:14

GinPalace - I know, nuts when I look back. I'd not long since been discharged due to the pre-eclampsia (only a day or two previously) and DH had been frantically decorating our house (we'd just moved in and it was in a very sorry state) so the cupboards, fridge and freezer were bare. I couldn't bear the thought of coming home to find that he'd done the shopping (control freak alert) but was quite amused at finding the teabags I'd bought during said shopping trip in the freezer. Not quite as cool and calm as I'd thought Grin
