I had an antenatal class last week then my next four start next tuesday. But things that have been going round in my head are really getting to me.Please be aware they are really stupid questions.

first were where you when your waters broke?

Yes Im haveing nightmares of being somewhere like out shopping and this happens.

second what time of day did your waters go?

there was something on the telly the other week that said most people go onto labour in the night time, wondering if its true.

thirdly (really really silly) what does your water smell like and will it stain my carpets?

I told you it was silly we had new carpets fitted last week,I dont know why.

I dont want to ask people in real life they might laugh at me,I dont mind if you do,cause I know they are silly questions, but if you knew what else was going through my head.............you wouldnt be able to stop laughing.

Brilliant!!! Can see why you wanted to stock up though.

So many people move house just before a baby arrives. Not stressful at all... nooooo. No wonder you had frozen tea bags - did you make iced tea with them? :)

elizaregina · 30/04/2012 12:23

Its so odd that we are all programed to think that it all starts with waters breaking!

I have no idea when mine went, my labour started with mucus plug, then gentle contractions for two days that were fine and bearable ( i started to get cocky and think, gosh what are people talking about - labour is nothing or I have a very high threshold), then it kicked in properly for 6 hours and she was born, during that 6 hours my waters must have broke but i have no recollection of water or anything,

PickledHegg · 30/04/2012 12:24

I realise I'm in the minority, however, my waters did actually go whilst I was out shopping with my sister at 38wks. I wasn't at all frightened or embarrassed, there was no drama, like you see on tv.

It really wasn't that bad, it was like a warm trickle down the inside legs of my jeans, luckily, it was mid-november and I'd worn a long-ish jumper that day, so just pulled it down further to cover my 'patch' and made our way back to the car.

Once your sitting down, it stops, until you stand up again, then comes another gush, but it went on for ages and each gush wasn't that much water.

Fwiw, I didn't actually go into labour until 12 hrs later, and DD wasn't born until 36hrs after labour started.

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 30/04/2012 12:31

My water broke with DC1 about 10 hours into established labour (around 34 hours? After 1st contraction) so was in hospital I went into labour with him at around 5am but waters broke (by MW) around 7.30pm following day.

With dc2 it was around 8 hours into established labour again in hospital and they broke on their own around 5pm but again labour starting late te previous night.

CPtart · 30/04/2012 12:43

With my first DS my waters broke on the toilet at two in the morning! It was 24hrs later before he was delivered.
With my second DS my waters broke with a bang at the pushing stage, and he came fairly quickly after that.

BuntyCollocks · 07/05/2012 13:15

With dc1 I had been in labour all day, contractions were a minute long every three minutes, lived 30 mins from the hospital, and they STILL wouldn't let me come in Shock.

I was grumbling to DH at 1am, "I wish my fucking waters would just go, then they'd have to let me come in," stood up, and felt the unmistakable trickle run down my legs.

Never been so glad to have wet pjs.

ItsMyLastOne · 07/05/2012 15:51

My waters never broke as such as I pushed them out in the sack (in hospital). It meant that I was 10cm before my waters broke and so the information on my notes looked strange. I think it was 2 minute second stage or something. It made it seem like it had all been very quick when in actual fact it was 3 days of contractions!

My sister's waters broke at around 9am in bed.

abbypumpkin · 07/05/2012 23:02

I also had waters broken in hospital by midwife. I have bought some bed mats that are used when potty training to put under the bed sheet in case waters break in bed. Other than that I don't think there's such a huge amount that it would flood the carpet. I think trousers would absorb enough of it until you got to toilet/ towel. I have heard that if your waters break in somewhere like mothercare you get free stuff!

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 07/05/2012 23:09

Dd my waters broke when I was in the bath.

Ds waters went when I was pushing ds out Grin

RockChick1984 · 08/05/2012 11:33

My waters went at 12.15am, that was my first sign of labour. I thought I'd pissed myself a little bit at first as I was walking through to the bathroom to use the loo, but when I got there it didn't smell like wee and I still had a full bladder! Was only like an incontinence leak, I put a maternity pad on to see what happened and had to change it after 45 mins. Contractions started about an hour after waters went.

Chunkychicken · 08/05/2012 12:51

DH had persuaded me to have a bath to help with contractions, & all of a sudden I felt this strange pressure down there & my waters went with a pop!! That was between 9 & 10pm so I'd been having contractions for about 10-11hrs, but only really regularly for about 2 or 3hrs at that point. No idea what they look or smell like, although my DH was panicking a bit as he called the midwife, as he could see 'bits' hanging out Blush Just grateful I couldn't see anything down there...

I was nearly fully dilated by that point as soon after I felt the same type of pushing/pressure, which I assume was DD's head and was whisked fairly hastily into the delivery suite. Grin

PestoPenguin · 08/05/2012 12:56

DC1 in hospital on the bed at about 5cm dilated. V little water
DC2 in birth pool about 20 secs before head was born
DC3 in birth pool about 2 mins before head was born

I think something like 80% labours do not start with waters going.
First time round once I was overdue I wore a pad when out and about just in case.

IsLovingAndGiving · 08/05/2012 13:02

Dc1 - waters broke unexpectedly in the middle of the night 2 weeks early. Labour started after.

Dc2 - Labour pains started at 6pm & quickly became very intense. Waters broke on our wooden floor in the hallway and baby was born an hour later on our living room floor (planned!)

Dc3 - very mild period pains. I was sitting with dc2 on settee when it felt like baby did an enormous wriggle and waters broke. Labour started soon after and dc3 was also born on our living room floor!

suburbandream · 08/05/2012 13:07

where were you when your waters broke? - Mine didn't with either of my DCs

there was something on the telly the other week that said most people go onto labour in the night time, wondering if its true. - Woke up in the night with DS1, knew something was happening then. Went to hospital at 3am but he wasn't born until 11pm! With DS2, I got up as normal but felt really sick (couldn't eat breakfast which is most unusual). Contractions started around 8am and he was born at lunchtime.

Psychopsilocybin · 08/05/2012 13:14

Waters broke at 3am. I woke up feeling uncomfortable, like I kept needing a wee, so was in and out of the bathroom every few minutes. Waters broke on the bathroom floor. Not alot though as the rest came out when I was pushing DS in labour, didn't smell or anything.

pigleychez · 08/05/2012 13:29

DD1- In bed at hospital after being induced. It was midnight exactly! Midwife didnt believe me saying it wouldnt happen so fast. That was till she realised that the bed was dripping! I was carrying ALOT of fluid!

DD2- At home in bed! 5am, it woke me up.

Both times it started as a sudden urge to wee, ran to the loo, small trickle. Got back to bed and flood!

2nd time I had a maternity mat thingy on the bed and stripped the sheets straight away so it didnt go into the mattress.

Def not silly questions. Both times I was paranoid that my waters would break somewhere really awkward!

I Think its only about 5% of people who's labours start with spontaneous waters breaking. I was in the minority.

TheToadLessTravelled · 08/05/2012 14:36

Mine went at 3am. I woke after feeling a weird blip like a bubble popping below and so I jumped out of bed. What looked like litres of clear fluid came out at once in such a rush it took my underwear down with it! It didn't smell of anything and was easy to clean up. That was the first sign of labour, and it then took 12 hours to get into proper labour and be admitted to hospital.

PineappleBed · 08/05/2012 14:39

The idea of waters is to lubricate and clean the baby's way out so most people's break once they're in established labour.

If you're worried you can buy absorbent mat things from the boots maternity section to sleep on.

i#ve had 3 babies and my waters were broken for me during labour with the first 2. with ds3 they went literally just before he was born

TheMightyMojito · 08/05/2012 14:45

Fewer than 15% of women's waters break before they're in labour, if that makes you feel any better. Stat quoted here and I remember it being mentioned in our antenatal classes.

soandsosmum · 08/05/2012 15:11

My waters broke 9pm in bed (v tired in final trimester!)
I didnt go into labour for another 36 hours
They were clear, watery, not stainy, but I was using a pad in bed just in case. Most of it went in the loo where I crept to when I felt them go.

no silly questions, I asked MILLIONS with my first dc. ask away :-)
