Right, I know we should roughly eat an extra 200 calories a day when pregnant and that especially towards the end but I'm now 17 wks and just cannot stop eating - I don't have craving for food, I'm genuinely massively hungry and by definition I eat way more than an extra 200 cal/day.

Today I've had:

5am: 1 protein bar
8am: 1 small bowl of unsweetened muesli + banana + berries + nuts then 1 slice of Vogel bread
11am: another slice of Vogel bread with a smidget of cheese
12.45: hummus and cucumber - I was shaking at the point and on the verge of strangling my toddler by then
1pm: homemade wonton soup + 1/2 protein bar

I'm still hungry, I'm like a bottomless pit and feel like I could eat my Iphone....

Anyone or am I just a fruit cake (hmmm)?

I wouldn't have been able to get by on that when I wasn't pregnant Wink - I wouldn't think you were overeating on that.

I was massively, insatiably hungry in my first tri but it's dropped back to normal levels now (16 weeks) - but I think it's different strokes for different folks and all that :)

I ate for Britain every time I was pg - in fact, my secretary knew I was pg with DD3 before I told anyone because I started having toast at 10am, every dayBlush I had a hooooge craving for Sugar Puffs when pg with DD2 - DH swore I was going to give birth to the Honey Monster.

Try and keep the food healthy stuff (OK a leetle bit of cake won't hurt Wink) and eat to your appetite, I'd say.

Eat! You are making a whole person inside your body.

Boys2mam · 24/04/2012 14:23

That would be my idea of a "diet menu" - you need something more filling. My appetite is fairly big and I find peanut butter on wholemeal toast fills me right up but is still healthy too.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 24/04/2012 14:25

I agree with boys2mam 100% says the girl who had a danish at lunchtime :)

nickelhasababy · 24/04/2012 14:26

you've not eaten enough to keep a sparrow alive! Shock

TrinityRhino · 24/04/2012 14:27

erm, that's really not much food at all

get stuck in, you're making a person in there

TrinityRhino · 24/04/2012 14:27

I second nickel

whenhenshaveteeth · 24/04/2012 14:27

Thanks, I've had more food since. I'm just surprised by how different this pregnancy is, I'm a lot more tired and hungry than last time!

Last time, I had strong cravings for sour and salty things but I wasn't that hungry, this time all I want to feel full IYKWIM and I especially lean towards salad, soup type thingies and fruit to the point of toddler thinking all I eat is salad. The other day in the supermarket he pointed at the lettuce and said "that's for mummy's lunch" Confused

Phew, not just me then - I am 23 weeks and starving!

I've had 2 cheese sandwiches, 2 packets of crisps, an apple, orange, 2 satsumas and half a pack of chocolate digestives - every single item of food I have with me till I get home from work tonight!

Aworryingtrend · 24/04/2012 14:29

I don't think you are eating a huge amount and what you are eating is very healthy but doesn't sound very filling- wanton soup and salad will not fill you up for long. To feel fuller for longer maybe try more complex carbs. Is Vogel bread some kind of special bread? Wholemeal would keep you full for a while.

nickelhasababy · 24/04/2012 14:30

you need to eat more often.
that hummous and cucumber was too late.
you should have had something carby with it, too.

try this:
5am: bowl of cereal
8am: 1 small bowl of unsweetened muesli + banana + berries + nuts then 2 slices of Vogel bread with cream cheese on it
11am: 2 more slices of Vogel bread with a large spreading of cheese
12:00pm: lunch - jeckat poato with cheese and beans
1pm: homemade wonton soup + 1/2 protein bar
3pm: snacks - cheese and crackers, or hummous, crackers, cucumber, salady stuff
5pm 2 slices bread with light spread
8pm proper dinner.

make sure you drink juice, hot chocolate, water, etc during the day.

blackteaplease · 24/04/2012 14:31

Agree with others, that's not much - although I don't know what your normal diet is like.

I'm 18 weeks and so far have eaten
3 weetabix with full fat milk, glass of oj
handful of grapes + handful of pineapple cubes
apple
banana
pain au chocolat
tuna and sweetcorn sandwich + a can of coke
medium steak pasty

That will be all until I get home as I have ran out of food. I will probably have some crackers with hummus while toddler dd has her tea then I will eat a full meal tonight.

nickelhasababy · 24/04/2012 14:32

you can eat fruit all the time too - satsumas, apples, grapes, raisins etc
and nuts.

you've not mentioned meat, but if you do it, then use that as protein/iron on your sandwiches.

you need to eat more.

blackteaplease · 24/04/2012 14:33

I've found that I am more tired this time (2nd) but I have a 2yo who still doesn't sleep through and is a ball of energy during the day. I just don't have the same opportunities to sit down and rest as I did the 1st time.

LolaAnn · 24/04/2012 14:42

Be careful about what's in your protein bar too. Now is not the time for artificial sweeteners/flavours.

whenhenshaveteeth · 24/04/2012 14:48

No I make my own, they're all natural and cheaper too!

I will have more food probably fruit and nuts in the afternoon - I have my eye on a pineapple. I also tend to have a snack around 5.30pm when toddler is eating, usually hummus and carrot or something or olives and cheese. Tonight the plan is chicken stir fry.

I'm glad I'm not the only one starving though!

tell your midwife or gp on your next appointment, it may be nothing but thyroids can do funny things through pg and possible it is over active and making your hungry - best to say and get it checked

oikopolis · 24/04/2012 16:26

OP i've never been a massive eater and i too have been shocked by the endlessness and voracity of my appetite (am 19 weeks).

i nearly cried when the GP gave me a healthy eating in pg booklet at 14 weeks, the suggested daily menus seemed ENORMOUS to me. even though i was eating much more than before pg, i wasn't touching the amount of food that was expected/recommended to me!

but when i went back at 18 weeks for a checkup, i had put on the exact amount of recommended weight for that 4 week period. haemoglobin/iron levels also perfect.

so the moral of the story is... listen to your body. don't let yourself get the shakes, keep the food coming. but don't stuff yourself if your bod is telling you "put the marmite toast down" iyswim.

DangerMousey · 24/04/2012 18:18

I am only 8+3 but am absolutely ravenous. Am worried about gaining too much weight as I was at the top of the healthy BMi range for my height before I got pregnant :(

So far today I have had:

0730 bowl of shreddies with semi skimmed milk
0930 banana and strawberry smoothie as a small tub of fruit salad from sainsburys next to my office
1145 two Belvita breakfast biscuits
1300 tuna and cucumber roll and pack of low fat crisps
1500 apple
1645 2 x weight watchers ginger biscuits to stave off nausea and see me through the commute home.

Will be having risotto and salad for tea later.

I am trying to stick to healthy choices seeing as I appear to be needing to eat almost every hour of the day...!

Does this look like a terrible list? I have stopped weighin myself after I put on 3 lbs by week six Shock.

tearoomtrash · 24/04/2012 19:46

I'm 23+2 and permanently starving! Today so far I've had:

7:00 - 2 weetabix with semi-skimmed milk, 2 slices fruit toast, 2 satsumas, glass smoothie
11:30 - an apple
12:45 - cheese salad, yoghurt, cereal bar
4:00 - chocolate muffin & a couple of biccies (would never have touched this stuff before but crave it like mad in the afternoons now)
6:30 - a sausage roll
7:30 - chicken with mixed veg & potatoes

There will be more....

I've gone from a size 8 to a 12 so far, and my thighs are starting to rub together when I walk! I used to eat an incredibly clean & healthy diet and had infinite will power - I hope it returns once the baby arrives!
