First time mum... things are getting real!

Hi,

I'm going to be a mum for the first time in Sept/October. I'm really excited but getting nervous now as things are getting real.

I've been given 3 different due dates so I have no idea when I'm actually due, other than around the end of Sept. :) My husband and I were trying for over 2 years and had just started fertility investigations, and hey presto, natural conception. I think this is also part of why it's taken 18 weeks for it to feel real!

Anyone got any major advice for someone in my position?

Thanks ladies!

Congratulations! I'm due DC1 in early Oct too :)

I'd go with the date they gave you at the 12 week scan, this is likely to be the one the MWs will go off :)

alison5891 · 23/04/2012 17:13

Thanks, I will do. Congratulations to you too. It's so exciting! How are you getting on? I'm really looking forward to the 20 weeks scan next month. Can't believe that's the last time we'll see the baby until the birth! :)

Another first timer here! Was due on Oct 24, now due on Oct 16. I'm kind of hoping they re-date it back again to later October as could do with accruing a few more days leave pro rata Wink

I don't think it got properly real until we heard the heart beat at the scan 2 weeks ago. Now...OMG! My main worry is how do we figure out if our first floor flat can hold a birthing pool...how do you even find that put? Lordy!

Benaberry · 24/04/2012 10:33

if it makes you feel any better, it didn't feel real for me with DS until about 34 weeks, at which point I had a major meltdown, sobbing "there's going to be a baby" - which 'D'H found hilarious, having long since worked that one out.

Now 26wks with DC2, and, you've guessed it, it still doesn't feel particularly real; yes there's a bump, and kicks, and have seen baby a few times and heard the heartbeat, but somehow my mind can't quite grasp the fact that in 3 months, there's going to be another baby in the house!

Ref the dates, I also have a range now from scans, at the moment MW's are still going with the one from 12 weeks, as they did last time, so I'd use that in terms of mental planning :)

I'm 27 weeks (due late July) and it is only just beginning to feel real to me. We took almost 6 years to concieve and I think that added to the unreality of it all. Somewhere in my head I'm still someone who can't believe that it's possible that I'm pregnant.

Last year I decided to lose weight as I felt that would be an obsticle towards us getting fertility treatment whether or not it was responsible for us being able to concieve. I figured I'd go to the doctor for fertility tests once I had got down to a BMI of under 30 (started with one over 50). So in my head, I was going to get pregnant sometime this year after losing weight and perhaps with some clomid or similar.

Instead I found out I was pregnant naturally towards the end of last year (apparently my body decided a BMI just under 40 was close enough). Was kind of taken aback, I think because of two things:

  1. I'd expected to be closer to a normal weight when I got pregnant, so was upset that I'd still be considered an obese pregnant woman with any risks that entailed.
  2. We hadn't been using contraception for 6 years! Six years! So I just assumed that we couldn't get pregnant without help. Made me a little nervous that yes, unprotected sex really can result in something as life changing as a baby.

So I think that whilst pregnancy can seem unreal for many, it is even more so for those that have been trying for so long.

The scans helped me believe I was pregnant (at the exact moment of the scans, doubt set in within moments of leaving the scan rooms again) particuarly hearing the heartbeat. Its now that I'm getting regular strong movements that its finally sinking in (that and a huge bump!) and I'm feeling connected to this little one.

Now if only those nesting instincts would kick in so that I could sort out the house for baby coming..

AnaisAnais · 24/04/2012 11:52

I've just found out that I am pregnant with DC1, after ttc for 2yrs Grin
We had our first round of ICSI IVF earlier this month and although we only had one embryo out of ten fertilise on the day, he's made it (DH is convinced it's a boy that is strong enough to survive without his siblings)!
I'm overwhelmed and just simply cannot believe it.... I won't be due for ages after you guys, but can I join?

AnaisAnais · 24/04/2012 12:06

CONGRATS AngelFairy :D :D :D

Hi all! I am another first timer - due end of October. We conceived naturally after two failed IVF (ICSI) attempts.

Congratulations to everyone - it is so lovely to hear people's stories.

Is anyone planning to find out the sex? We have decided to because my father has been very unwell and he really wants to know what it's going to be. We asked at our 12 week scan and the sonographer said it looked marginally more like it would be a girl, but he was very non-committal. If you are going to find out, will you wait till 20 weeks, or have another scan at 16?

Yummymummyyobe1 · 24/04/2012 12:26

I'm due on Sunday will baby number one and can hardly wait, it is exciting and scary at the same time. Nesting has set in. xx

AnaisAnais · 24/04/2012 12:30

AngelFairy · 24/04/2012 13:13

Thanks Anais, it does feel extremely good but also very surreal.
I have my 7wk scan on 14th May... I think I'll go insane by then too, and that's by just keeping my fingers crossed!
I hope you're able to keep yourself sane and that it goes well.
I have had some slight nausea, but nothing too severe, thankfully - Poor you!
Oh, and an IVF due date is 38wks after egg collection, so mine is currently estimated at 1st January 2013 Smile

How amazing sweatpea, you must be so thrilled. Congratulations.

Oh my... Good luck for your pending delivery Yummy - How exciting!

capecath · 24/04/2012 13:15

Don't think it hit us until we brought him home and then even for the first months most nights we'd go "oh my goodness, we have a son!!" and the amazing responsibility sinks in... he was rather early so that was bizarre with him in hospital for the first few weeks it felt even less real!

Enjoy every moment of your pregnancy and make the most of sleeping in, going to the cinema and nights out with your partner if you can. Go on a pre-baby holiday! Precious, precious, joyous times ahead, but also many (exciting!) changes. Can't even explain how much I love my DS and DC2 on the way, it is all rather overwhelming.

As for the due date, well, most don't arrive on their due date anyway so don't worry if you're not sure! Ours certainly didn't... 37 weeks onwards is actually considered "full term".

AnaisAnais · 24/04/2012 13:21

lol ull feel crazy, there was a time i was like ' what if ive been feeling sick but theres nothing there' even my oh was saying it haha, but there is defo a baby there, s/he has been going crazy this morning, have felt loads of 'popping'!! its so weird.
make sure you keep eating little and often to stop your sickness cus its not pretty!
my oh bday is 1st january haha lovely new years pressie
xx

AngelFairy · 24/04/2012 15:42

ha... Popping? That's different... Maybe s/he is blowing bubbles or has hiccups - too cute.
Isn't funny how your instincts kick in? I have found myself grazing these past few days, as I've been feeling really hungry instantly before I feel nauseous, so to avoid it I was quickly stuffing a biscuit or something in my mouth...
Was starting thinking that I'm going to be heifer if I keep up the munching each time I felt ill Hmm

Just because I can only tell people on here...
The clinic have just confirmed the pregnancy through my blood test today (I'd previously tested at home), but is just great to know that it's official.
I'm pregnant Grin

I'll stop going on about it now... Blush

AnaisAnais · 24/04/2012 15:47

yeah lol, like gurgling in my tummy but i know its not my stomach hehe, mini kicks and somersaults no doubt. dont worry about what your eating well the quantity, i used to be a BIG eater and have only recently got my appetite back because of the sickness..even now i cant eat th same sized meals i used to :( i eat about 3/4. so eat now cus i hope you wont but u might get sickness, lol i didnt eat for 10days that got me down cus i like to eat for the taste of food not for the nutrtional value.
CONGRATS ITS OFFICIAL :D
