How did you feel before your first ever 12 week scan?

Because I am absolutely petrified! I've got another couple of days to wait and I'm starting to get very panicky.

Despite the fact that I saw a healthy baby with a good heartbeat at eight weeks I still feel petrified that something might be right.

Is it normal to feel like this?

Very normal! I was terrified before my first scan. Everything was absolutely fine Smile

I've now got to wait 2.5 weeks til my first scan with dc2 though it doesn't get any easier!

Doodlekitty · 23/04/2012 08:28

I have mine on Friday (13 weeks) and I'm starting to get nervous now. It still does not seem real, symptoms are getting better and I almost just feel 'normal' so I can't wait to see that everything is ok.

only4tonight · 23/04/2012 08:31

Yep terrified. Kept repeating to sonographer. Is it ok is it ok. It was!

Elizadoesdolittle · 23/04/2012 08:36

I'm with you there. I'm so scared. And like you at 8wk I had a private scan. Baby was nice and active with heartbeat but I'm convinced that something will be wrong at my 12wk scan. Mines a week today. I'm just trying to keep busy and not think too much about it. Much easier said than done I know. Sorry, no advice but you're not the only one by a long shot!

shelley72 · 23/04/2012 08:38

completely normal i would say. my first ever scan with DS i was really nervous but quite excited. scan with DD was so petrified that i almost cancelled the appointment!

its such an exciting time though Smile. good luck and enjoy it!

DialMforMummy · 23/04/2012 08:44

Yes, normal. I was shitting myself, especially that a lot of my friends received bad news at 12 weeks scan. Hope it goes well.

MandaHugNKiss · 23/04/2012 08:48

My very first? I was young (well, 20, 21 by the time I gave birth) and naive - it didn't even occur to me anything could be wrong... that ignorance really was bliss!

Now I'm older and wiser, yes, I have felt more apprehensive (well, this time, follwoing a loss, pretty scared) so your reaction sounds perfectly normal!

But having seen a hb earlier you know the chances are everything is fine, right? Try not to mental too much.

CommanderShepard · 23/04/2012 10:06

Terrified - I'd woken up that morning with a bright red bleed and was sure I was miscarrying. As soon as I saw the heartbeat and very bouncy happy baby I burst into ribshaking sobs to the extent that the sonographer had to ask my husband if the fact I was pregnant was good news Blush

Whysoserious · 23/04/2012 13:02

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I feel constantly on the verge of tears i'm so worried. Just want the next 32 hours to fly by!

I held my breath until I heard the heartbeat, then I took in this massive gasp of air and burst into tears. I think until that moment, I hadn't dared start to try to bond with this little creature inside me.

Who knows how things will progress, but I have definitely begun to feel a lot closer to my little one, a LOT more protective, and a lot more excited.

Pre-scan I was very much - things are happening to me. Now I feel like I'm merging into a there's a little one to focus on. That's the best way I can put it :)

bettybat · 23/04/2012 13:12

Oh sorry, forgot to say - very, very good luck with all of your upcoming scans :)

Whysoserious · 23/04/2012 15:34

Thanks for the reassurance ladies. I never realised how much Of a stress and worry things would be before I got pregnant.

I'm keeping everything crossed for a positive scan on weds and good luck to all of you who are awaiting scans too Smile

I had a little cry in the waiting room because I was convinced, for no reason whatsoever, that it was going to be bad news. I had had an early scan too, but by 12w the morning sickness had abated and I had no external signs of being pregnant. It was all fine though. I'm sure yours will be fine too :)

WantAnOrange · 23/04/2012 16:33

MandaHugNKiss I was 17 when I had my first ever scan and like you it didn't occur to me that anything would be wrong. This time round (I'm 15 weeks) I was terrified! I think mumsnet made me to aware!

blacktreaclecat · 23/04/2012 16:39

I was excited. I'd had scans every 2 weeks and was very hopeful it would be ok. We were planning a shopping trip to Mamas and Papas afterwards
The nuchal was 11mm. We had to terminate
Devastated
This time I was terrified. It was fine, 1.4mm :)

Badgerina · 23/04/2012 19:47

In all honesty I was massively excited and very complacent about the baby being healthy. It didn't even cross my mind that there'd be a problem.

This time, 7 years later, I was PETRIFIED.

AWomanCalledHorse · 23/04/2012 19:52

blacktreaclecat, sorry for your loss, but glad everything is ok this time around. x

We'd told MIL at 5wks, so the entire world knew. I didn't think of DS as a potential child until I held him at the birth, spent the pg referring to him as embryo or foetus as I didn't want to be too attached should the worst happen. He can't get rid of me now, mwhaha.

Good luck OP & everyone else awaiting scans.

Whysoserious · 23/04/2012 20:17

Sorry for your loss blacktreaclecat that just have been awful for you.

As much as I live Mumsnet it's also a curse because I would live to be blissfully ignorant but unfortunately am not!

Good luck to everyone with your pregnancies Grin

Good luck for your scan
What happened to us is uncommon

Loislane78 · 23/04/2012 22:06

Terrified, excited and another layer of terror on top :)

I wasn't much better at the 20 wk one but both times I ended up really enjoying it and had lovely sonographers (lucky in both senses). My advice, yes be aware of the possibilities but don't let that take over your emotions completely.

Good luck!!
