Moses basket mattress

We've been given a lovely Moses basket by friends. Do you think I need to get a new mattress? It's about 2 years old. Was used for 6 months by their DD, then stored for a year and then used for another 6 months by their DS, then it's come straight to us. It's in immaculate condition.

I was in the same situation and thought it wasnt worth taking the chance, I got a new matress for ur for £10 or £15 x

I would have reused if it had been passed down from my own children as then I would know the history of peeing/puking on it. As it is from someone else I would get a new mattress for it - they are not expensive.

We had this disucssion yesterday at antenatal, and FSID do advise to get a new mattress for each new baby. I paid £20 for ours from mother care.

I have one from dd now aged 2 and am going to buy a new mattress for it for dc2 due in a few weeks. Best to be on the safe side.

I'd always get a new matteress.

We got one from here babymattressesonline.co.uk/ they cut one specially as ours was a funny size and it still cost less than £20
Very quick efficient delivery too

If money isn't tight then there's no harm getting a new matress. If you are having to scrimp for every penny then the question becomes how much are you going to use it? If it will be just for daytime naps (except when using the pram or a sling) and you will have a crib for night time then I wouldn't bother. If it will be the main place of sleeping then I would.

I bought a new mattress for a second hand moses basket. Wish I had not bothered. They are completely covered in plastic so imo if no rips or marks, will do fine with a wipe as they are covered in sheets anyway. A cot mattress is different as they are often ventilated.

Mine has been in the attic for 3 years since last use so I've got a new one. About £11 in babies r us.

HappyAsEyeAm · 23/04/2012 14:45

I bought a new one after we had loaned ours out to friends. I think it was about £12 in Mothercare. They had two standard sizes.

MissPenteuth · 23/04/2012 16:31

The danger of second-hand mattresses is that if they get damp in storage then harmful bacteria can grow and put the baby at risk of SIDS.

I'd always buy a new one (and will be doing so for DC2, even though it's only been 2 years since the Moses basket was used by DD). For the sake of about £10 is't not worth the risk imo.

OP, not sure if you've already sorted out a replacement mattress but I've just bought one on ebay (brand new from shop, free P&P) for £5.66 from here: stores.ebay.co.uk/juniormattresses it's by far the cheapest place I've found, and the only one that does a smaller mattress (mine's 65cm x 28cm) that doesn't require you to have it cut to order. Bargain! :o

growingweeble · 26/04/2012 00:23

I was told that the issue with mattresses is if moisture gets into the foam and bacteria form, which gives off gases and it's that which they think increases risk of SIDS. So if the mattresse is covered in plastic (as our Moses mattress is) it is fine to reuse. I'm about to reuse ours for our second baby and have lent to a friend too.

We were in a similar situation OP except the mattress we had was plastic so I think it would have been ok to use. However I though it was a bit flimsy so got a new and much better mattress from John Lewis which was around £20. I would get a new one if I were you.
