where do I get one of these from please? I had a normal one; ie black writing on yellow background (free from Volvo) which I hoped was in the loft but I can't find it.iv looked on amazon but i don't like those silly pink ones with little writing which arent very clear to other
drivers.thanks in advance x

Why do you need one? Or just decorative? Have you looked in halfords and big supermarkets?

FunnysInLaJardin · 20/04/2012 10:36

Didn't know you could get these. Why would you need to advertise this anyway?

Whysoserious · 20/04/2012 12:08

I didn't realise you could get these. It's a really good idea.

I don't know why people are asking why you would need one or why you would need to advertise this - surely that's obvious?!

StealthPolarBear · 20/04/2012 12:09

Is it, why??

FunnysInLaJardin · 20/04/2012 12:10

why is it obvious? Why does anyone need to know you are pregnant?

Whysoserious · 20/04/2012 12:12

Well why do people have baby on board signs?

This is for exactly the same reason - there's a baby on board (just not born yet) and idiot drivers may think twice about making stupid manoeuvres that may endanger them.

I don't think you really needed that explaining though did you Wink

StealthPolarBear · 20/04/2012 12:13

For the dash to hospital, all I can think....even then I don't agree its necessary
Am puzzled

Chubfuddler · 20/04/2012 12:14

Does anyone actually think people drive any more considerately because of a baby on board sign? Most people don't plan to run up the back of another car tbh.

StealthPolarBear · 20/04/2012 12:14

Again, I always thought baby on board signs were decorative. Do you think they really change other drivers behaviour?

pictish · 20/04/2012 12:16

Those signs were originally desined to alert the emergency services that there was a child present, in the event of an accident. A small child could end up flung into a footwell for example, so might not be noticed straight away.

pictish · 20/04/2012 12:16

designed

Sastra · 20/04/2012 12:17

I thought the original baby on board signs were so that in the event of a collision the emergency services would know to look for a baby or small child.

FunnysInLaJardin · 20/04/2012 12:17

I think it is mostly showing off (and why not Grin) I really don't think it changes anyone driving behaviour. I had honestly not heard of mum to be on board signs.

wonkylegs · 20/04/2012 12:18

I don't modify my driving because of the type of other vehicles/drivers around me - I just drive properly, paying attention to what's going on around me. If it's idiot drivers you're worried about - they are generally idiot drivers because they don't give a monkeys about what is going on around them so they are unlikely to read a small sign in the back of your car, let alone modify their behaviour. Pointless waste of money.

wolvesarejustoldendaydogs · 20/04/2012 12:18

pictish - i think that's just a myth. people with those signs don't tend to take them dow when the baby's not in the car.

HollyGoHeavily · 20/04/2012 12:18

Nope of course not. I suspect the 'Grandma On Board', 'Little Prince on Board' signs just make other drivers want to vomit, drastically increasing the likelihood of hurl-related accident....

Whysoserious · 20/04/2012 12:24

Regardless of whether you agree or disagree I think it does make some people think twice yes.

And that aside, if it makes someone feel better then why not?

PatriciaHolm · 20/04/2012 12:25

Do people really think that idiot drivers see the sign and think, "oh, better not zoom past at 100 and do a hand brake turn in front of them, there is a baby on board"??!!! Idiots are idiots, they don't care who is in your car!

pictish · 20/04/2012 12:28

It's not a myth. That's why they came about in the first place.

The fact that people use them now, to be twee and self promoting, is neither here nor there....they were brought out to alert the emergency services to the presence of a baby or small toddler.

DowagersHump · 20/04/2012 12:34

It is a myth pictish - ask any member of the emergency services. What if the child isn't in the car at the time? What if the sign gets damaged in a collision?

I don't modify my driving at all for baby on board/mum to be on board signs - I drive carefully and defensively all the time.

You don't need one OP - it's a waste of your money.

Whysoserious · 20/04/2012 12:36

An idiot is an idiot yes. There's no changing that. But there occasions when there are usually very sensible drivers that are in a rush / have a moment of madness / tiredness / lack of concentration and make a manoeuvre that they shouldn't have done. I've done it. Well done to those of you that are practically perfect in every way and haven't.

I know that seeing a sign like that would snap me back into focus and make me rethink a silly manoeuvre or take extra care.

You could argue that a baby is actually in a safer position within the car at the back than an unborn child who is in fact sitting right in front of the airbag.

I think, if it makes a mother feel better, safer on the road then why the hell not?! Why should people assume they are just being twee or showing off??

DowagersHump · 20/04/2012 12:39

It might affect you like that Whysoserious but I know a couple of friends suffering with infertility who haven't felt remotely positive about seeing the signs, quite the opposite

cutegorilla · 20/04/2012 12:45

I love that bit in The Simpsons when Marge gets the baby on board sign and says "Now people will stop intentionally ramming our car!"

The alerting emergency services thing is rubbish btw www.snopes.com/horrors/parental/babysign.asp and I remain to be convinced they affect people's driving. However if you want one I see no harm. Try eBay or amazon.

hellsbells76 · 20/04/2012 12:45

yup, it's a myth www.snopes.com/horrors/parental/babysign.asp
some comedian (ben elton?) was talking about these signs ages ago and said they're basically showing off 'look, i've done it and there's the proof! no virgins in this car!'

cutegorilla · 20/04/2012 12:46
