where do I get one of these from please? I had a normal one; ie black writing on yellow background (free from Volvo) which I hoped was in the loft but I can't find it.iv looked on amazon but i don't like those silly pink ones with little writing which arent very clear to other
drivers.thanks in advance x

oh beaten to it with the snopes...

pictish · 20/04/2012 12:49

oh

igggi · 20/04/2012 12:49

I would regard a mum-to-be sign in the same way as if I see an L plate - as a warning that the driver in front might do something erratic and unexpected!
(And I write this as a pg person)

BulletProofMum · 20/04/2012 12:49

I'm on the waste of side - I think they're are ridiculous - (I also have a rather snobbish view about them). You can't seriously think a prat is goign to drive differently becasue you have a sign in your rear window.

cutegorilla · 20/04/2012 12:50

Only by 21 seconds Grin

StealthPolarBear · 20/04/2012 12:53

ohhh iggggi you are going to get flamed Grin
Unless you actually mean go into labour - then I can accept a pg woman might swerve or brake suddenly

Bluegrass · 20/04/2012 12:55

What if the driver behind is one of the countless people who feel a huge surge of irritation when they see these twee little signs, might the adrenaline rush not cause them to drive more aggressively, thus putting the owner of the sign at greater risk of being involved in an accident? Without a study into this you are just playing Russian roulette!

igggi · 20/04/2012 12:58

Ah Stealth I am prone to falling asleep unexpectedly, and having bouts of rage and weeping in almost equal measure - I had hoped this was universal!

MandaHugNKiss · 20/04/2012 13:01

I don't actually drive myself, so perhaps shouldn't comment... BUT! as a woman who has been through five pregnancies, I see a small element of these signs being a warning to other drivers:

Early pregnancy can = extreme fatigue and/or extreme and sudden onset nausea. SHouldn't drive in either state, but how many of you have? I'd imagine, through necessity, that many do. Making them erratic drivers.

Home stretch can = you are massive and/or exhausted. Manouvres may take you a little longer as you struggle to look over your shoulder for a blind spot/reach the gears or... stuff. Like sudden fecking hard boots into your ribs that make you gasp and physically jolt (definite loss of concentration for a few seconds there if driving!) or how about waters going?

Hopefully, much like the green L plates, other drivers would think 'ah, there's a reason that three point turn is taking her forever'

Am I talking bollocks?

ItsMyLastOne · 20/04/2012 13:23

I often think, like some others here, that a baby on board sign is more a warning to me that the owner of the sign might do something stupid.

To me it's like a P plate. If you've passed your test, you don't need a P plate but some people have them to warn others they're not very experienced at driving, right?

So people with baby on board signs have them to tell other people they may be distracted and do something they wouldn't normally do.

I don't have one because I have extended rear facing seats and can ignore the children much more easily! Wink And the seats are very high and we have sunshades in the windows so anyone can see I have children in the car anyway.

Have I got this all mixed up?

farmerswifey · 20/04/2012 13:33

Personally I would hate anything that would either take drivers attention away from the road even for a second in order to read my sign or anything that distracts or impedes my view through even a small part of my rear window.

PickleSarnie · 20/04/2012 13:42

Agree with itsmylast, the only possible purpose they serve is to warn other drivers that you may be a bit erratic because your attempting to pick up toys/break up a sibling argument/at the end of your tether from screaming child.

My sister is firefighter and she says the whole alerting them to the presence of a small child is nonsense. If the car is so mangled they can't see a dirty great cat seat then they wont see a small sign. Also, people dont take them out when their children aren't on board rendering them useless really.

ShowOfHands · 20/04/2012 13:47

I'm going to get dh a 'my balls work' one. And a 'MIL in boot' one for shits and giggles.

I'd rather people concentrated on driving than reading the twee signs displayed unnecessarily in the rear of cars.

cjbk1 · 20/04/2012 16:36

my god! i didnt mean to start a war! Shock i just wanted one because im proud of my little bump! i should have asked on netmums Sad i thought id check back on here and have a load of helpful replies i wont come on this thread again i'll just let it die

StealthPolarBear · 20/04/2012 16:41

:o
You have no reason to be ashamed - my thinking was if you're proud you'd probably want one of the more decorative ones
Lol at I'll just ask on netmums
Congratulations btw, when are you due?

Weezie85 · 20/04/2012 16:55

Could of done with one of these the other day when someone parked so close to my car that I had to ask a stranger to jump into my car as they could get over the handbrake and gears and reverse it out for me(even they couldn't squeeze into the drivers side). Although given that it was clearly someone who was a complete ass not sure it would of helped.
Sorry, mini rant there.

FunnysInLaJardin · 20/04/2012 17:14

hmmm cjbk1 you don't know MN very well if you expected helpful replies about car stickers. Do they like that sort of thing on Netmums then? Of course you should be proud of your little bump, but a car sticker is a twee step too far for most of us old folk on here

ItsMyLastOne · 20/04/2012 17:15

Weezie I have often though the parent a child spaces should really be parent and child or huge pregnant women spaces! Wink

shushpenfold · 20/04/2012 17:17

My dh almost speeds up when he sees these signs...I can see his top lip curl (in a Rob Pattinson kind of way!) and his leg muscles contract in readiness to ram!

MandaHugNKiss · 20/04/2012 19:29

Well what is a pregnant women if not parent and child, ItsMy? Seems to me it should be perfectly acceptable for a pregnant woman to utilise the spot!

Caveat - as I said, I don't drive! Grin

Charleymouse · 20/04/2012 19:54

Best car sign (homemade) I have seen is

"6 points on licence can not manage without car so am sticking to speed limit please feel free to overtake"

Charleymouse · 20/04/2012 19:57

Perhaps should have an "In labour" one as I am sure my driving wasn't quite at its usual high quality when driving home from holiday after my waters had gone and I was having contractions. I did grip the wheel quite firmly every 4.5 minutes!

Cremeeggsandkitkatsoldiers · 20/04/2012 19:58

people who think they're ace drivers and speed limits, normal rules of the road don't apply to them because they're way too awesome.. will still drive dangerously if you have signs, because signs (of any kind) don't really apply to them

They are pointless and irritating!

Bunbaker · 20/04/2012 20:14

Quite frankly I couldn't care less if the driver in front of me is pregnant, an old man, a young lady or whatever. I just want them to drive safely.

Like cremeeggs I find these signs rather pointless and potentially dangerous because other divers are trying to read the sign rather than look at the road. So the driver has managed to get pregnant, so woo hoo and bully for her.

I can see a need for a removable sign that can be placed in the windscreen in supermarket car parks though.

bettybat · 20/04/2012 21:48

It always feels to me, sorta, like it's saying a pregnant woman's life is more valid than anyone else's so therefore - drivers, take care around the pregnant woman, but not anyone else!
