Iron

Am in the third trimester, iron levels down at 8.
GP has prescribed 250mg of ferrous furate (sp?) to be taken x 3 a day, am to return for more bloods and then see whether or not I need to be sent for blood infusions which I had to have last PG and really, really do not want to have again.
I've upped the spatone sachets (although i realise there's a significant difference in amount of iron, they do say however, that how much we absorb tablet form is questionable) and trying to up intake of iron rich veg.

Any other suggestions?
I just really don't want the infusions again, had a horrid experience last time and involves childcare etc..

Thanks in advance.

Hello there, well I ate loads of green veg and cheerios. Not together though, haha. Cheerios seem to have loads of iron in. Also have a glass of orange juice when eating things with iron in as it helps absorb it. Cut out tea when eating iron rich foods, not sure if its the tanin or something, but it reduces absoprtion.

I think if you can stomach it, iron supplements are best taken on an empty stomach to increase absorption, unlike many other vitamins.

The reason the amount is different is because the iron is more available in the Spatone. It is way better. Agree with the no tea thing, any type at all. And orange juice at same time as iron.

My friend got her iron up by eating loaded of liver. You could try that

susiegrapevine · 18/04/2012 16:51

You defo should have vit c as this helps iron absorbtion so might be good to take a vit c supplement at the same time

blondiep14 · 18/04/2012 16:58

Doesn't Vit B12 help absorption as well? Not sure but think my Dsis had that when she was taking iron?

Black strap molasses. It's like a bitter black treacle. I take a teaspoon a day as it's full of iron.
