morning!

I'm 40+5 and hoping to go into labour very soon! On the hospital tour they told us to try and wait to go in until we are having 3/4 contractions every 10 minutes that last a minute each!

That sounds painful to me and I'm not sure I'll have lasted that long with no gas and air!!

Do you know how many cm you were at about that stage, I'm hoping it's about 6/7 by that point and I don't wanna get there and be told I'm 2 lol

God I'm scared now

Iv had 2 vag deliveries and each time I waited till the pain was getting unbareable then went each time I got there I was 8 cm and took around another 2 hours before baby was born. I well be doing same this time if possible.

ginpalace the last contractions were atrociously painful (now I know it's because they were particularly efficient!) and DD shot out like a cannonball - I had to push for about 30 seconds (including when MW told me to stop because the cord was around DD's neck!)

whispers Bearhugs43 When I was pregnant with my first my yoga teacher told us she didn't know why the majority of women didn't plan to at least start out with home births because then you'd get a midwife to come out to you to support you in labour, with gas and air, and you'd still get the choice to transfer into hospital in labour just like everyone else looks around innocently

My hospital said 3 contractions in 10 minutes and/or if the pain was unbearable. I had the former and was 5cm when they examined me.

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 17/04/2012 18:00

I was 4cm when I got to hospital then gave birth 30 minutes later!

MillyStar · 17/04/2012 18:14

Well I've had my sweep, wasn't half as bad as i thought!

I'm about 1cm and cervix is soft, I'm booked in the hosp for 8am on Monday to be induced if nothing has happened so I might be there from being 1cm anyway!

I'd second what Boys said - go in when you feel you can't cope at home anymore. I got to the point where I felt I'd need drugs soon and was 8cm when I arrived but it was another 6 hours before DD popped out (on G&A - labour stalled due to the change of environment I think).

Having said that I have a friend who went in and was only 2cm. It was good she went when she did as they discovered a problem and whipped her son out by C section saving them both. Not saying that to scare anyone currently expecting obviously but would hate anyone to feel they "should" wait at home rather than getting pain relief! Moral of the story is GO IN WHEN YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO! Smile

10 - but I would not recommend you do this!

Pascha · 17/04/2012 18:54

I had a sweep and was 3cm, no symptoms of labour. First contraction 9ish hours later, in hospital 3 hours after that at 7cm, baby in arms after another 3 hours.

Jinglebearbaby When my mum had my little brother 25 yrs ago she had something called Domino care, where a MW came out to you at home when labour started, then accompanied you to hospital, sounded great!

ChasingSquirrels · 17/04/2012 18:57

Ds1 - no idea, but I was fully dilated and ready to push when they examined me.

Ds2 - home birth, but he was born half an hour before the midwife arrived.

IMO it is better not to know. Go in when you need to and tell them to keep their fingers the hell away from your cervix.

If I need to be there or need pain relief then I couldn't give a monkeys how many cm I am, and them finding out won't tell them the level of that need nor how much longer I hav to go!

FuckedOfftotheFarSideofFuck · 17/04/2012 19:00

I was 5cm with my first, she was born about 5 hours later.

I was 4cm with my second, he was born just over an hour later.

With DC2, the contractions were about every 5 mins and lasting a minute when I went in.

Can't quite remember how far apart they were with DD but they had been gradually building up over the previous 4/5 hours.

Good luck! You'll be fine!

Safmellow · 17/04/2012 19:07

Oh I had my sweep a year ago today!

I started getting pains at 3am the next morning, contractions were all over the place and I ended up going to hospital 20 hours later to find I was only 2cm! But I went because I was in agony. Gave birth 10 hours after that.

My labour seems to have been back to front, the very first pain I had lasted 5 full minutes and was worse than when DD popped out! The dilation was the worst bit but the pushing was much easier.

As pp said every labour is different and you will know when you really cannot cope any more and need help.

Good luck! :) x
