I am only in my first trimester (still. It seems like I have been pregnant for 10 years though!) but am starting to think about what sort of money we are going to be needing to buy all the essentials.

We'll more than likely buy the majority of stuff new - mainly because I am crap at bargain hunting, and am a bit wary of buying stuff on eBay etc without actually having seen it. Hoping that they will see through 2 maybe 3 children...

If I start putting away each month we should have a good £2000+ to get all the essentials with. Is this enough?

What are the basics that we're going to need? I'm thinking pram (or travel system as they seem to be called?!), cot, car seat, nappies, clothes...erm is there anything else?

Seeing your post has got me thinking and totting up my expenditure so far! I'm surprised at how much it comes to as I didn't think I've been extravagant or over the top at all! I've spent about £790 so far, which is broken down very roughly as follows:

  • cot bed (John Lewis sale) £150
  • second hand baby clothes from charity shops and Nearly new sales £20
  • second hand toys from above £20
  • basic baby clothes & equipment (scratch mitts, hat, vests, muslins etc) from various supermarkets £40
  • toiletries, including nappies (bulk bought!) and tenalady, breastpads, Milton etc £70
  • chest of drawers (IKEA) £80
  • nursery curtain fabric (splashed out a bit in John Lewis - but my mum's making the curtains so no further expense!!) £112
  • cot bed mattress (John Lewis) £140 - got a decent one as it's a cot bed so will be used longer than a cot
  • cot top changer with mat (JL) £50
  • one of those fancy poo sausage nappy bins (JL) £30
  • Primark trip for post birth clothes - big pants, button front nighties, dark comfy bottoms etc £30
  • 3 bottles (ASDA) £10
  • cot fitted sheets and cellular blankets 2 each £37

My parents have kindly bought our pushchair, so we went for a new iCandy, but if it hadn't been bought for us, we'd probably have aimed to spend around £400.

We've been given/lent:

  • moses basket and all bedding for it
  • manual breast pump (will buy electric one if end up expressing lots)
  • Maxicosi car seat and isofix base
  • chair for nursery
  • play gym
  • breastfeeding pillow
  • breastfeeding cover shawl

I still want to buy:

  • Manduca or Beco sling (about £100)
  • nursing bras (about £40)
  • suitable tops of me for breastfeeding (how long's a piece of string....!)
  • bouncy chair - plan to pick up a basic one up second hand
  • buggy lock
  • car mirror

Want to have, but might wait to see what presents we get:

  • play arch thing for buggy/car seat
  • mobile
  • hooded bath towel
  • muslins for swaddling

So if we hadn't been fortunate to be given or loaned quite a lot of big things, we could easily have reached £2000. Shock coz I don't think any of that is particularly overboard. That said, I could have picked up a whole load more second hand I'm sure.

This makes me sound very organised for 33 weeks :o Feeling very smug now....! (although it's only because I've had the last week off work and feel I need to do it now as don't have a spare weekend til 2 weeks before due date Confused)
