Baby's first clothes

I have looked back as far as my patience will permit for a thread on what is required clothing/kit wise for a newborn but to no avail.
I am not looking to get huge amounts of clothing just enough to start with so that I can the buy stuff as and when I need it. Any recommendations?
I am getting increasing confused with what's what? Vests vs. baby grows. And, what are wraps - some sort of top?

You'll need both vests and babygro's depending on time of year / climate - my DS I'd was an Oct baby so wore a vest under his babygro. You can either get vests which pull over the baby's head with poppers at the bottom or ones that wrap around like a cardi and then either have ties or poppers at the side. These are good if the baby hates having things pulled over their head but tbh we just used the normal style from birth and it was fine. Go for about 6-8 of each and be prepared to get more if you have a sicky baby!!

Vests for babies are called bodysuits and generally have poppers between the legs. Sleeveless ones are an easy layer for under a baby gro, which is also known as a sleep suit. This type of sleep suit here are easy to get on and off IMESSAGE from mothercare.
I just bought a few sleep suits and vests to start (maybe 6 of each in white) then ended up sending DH put for some more when I found out what size DS was!

Baby vests go under baby clothes and usually have poppers between the legs I would say 6 should do it.

Sleepsuits and Babygrows are one in the same thing and can be worn night or day again 6 should go it.

I would also advise some baby socks and scratch mitts. A couple of hats. xx

All you need for the first month or so are vests and sleepsuits. I like the vests that are called bodysuits, with poppers between the legs. Babies wear those under whatever else they have on (ds still has a vest on at 18 months!) and in the early days, a sleepsuit over the vest is all you need - obviously topped with a cardigan, snowsuit etc if you go out. There really isn't any point buying cute outfits for tiny babies as a) they puke/poo on them all the bloody time quite regularly, b) coping with sleep deprivation and feeding round the clock doesn't leave you much time for co-ordinating outfits anyway, c) they grow out of things really really quickly and those little outfits are expensive, and d) sleepsuits are comfy for baby and easy for your hapless husband to change (men are very afraid of putting clothes on babies for some reason Smile). I wouldn't bother with too much in newborn size either - ds never fitted in them but went straight into 0-3 (he was 8lb 14oz). A couple of packs of vests, couple of packs of sleepsuits, a cardi or two, and a hat will do you (I never understood why you need loads of hats - they only wear them outside, and they don't really get dirty).
