Today so far:

"You're a big girl, aren't you?"
"Yes well I'm 7 months pregnant"
"Yes, but you're a big girl, aren't you?"

I've put on the right amount of weight ACTUALLY and I'm a size 12/ 14 when not pregnant ACTUALLY, and anyway why are you saying this to me?!!

Pregnant = open season on our poor, ballooning bodies it would seem!

This woman I knew had a real issue about her weight (she wasnt overweight). I am thin (no special effort on my part ,just the way it is ).

She often makes little digs at people about their weight and was obviously delighted to finally have the chance to do it to me.

'oooooo look MrsDevere you can really tell you are pregnant now, you can really see it around your face'

Hmm

Silly cow.

LordyLady · 12/04/2012 18:07

Oh my gawd!!! The audacity, seriously. We're all still the same people behind the bump you know!!!

DonnaDoon that's horrendous. I'm sorry to hear your horrible story. Perhaps we could put it down to kids....or perhaps not.

PosiePaques errr sorry to have caused such a grievance with my use of the word preggers...just saving typing time when I should be working Blush

Lordy she was joking though lol

JustHecate · 12/04/2012 18:32

my mother has a total stopper. She says "Yes... Is it a problem to you?" in an icy voice. Staring them directly in the eyes. (So in the case you describe, it would be "Yes. I have put on weight, as is normal in a pregnancy. Is it a problem to you?")

Doesn't give a shit, my mother Grin

Try that.

She also does a great "why do you care?"

and once waved a scone in the face of a woman who was staring at her in a cafe - literally following every mouthful - and said "It's a scone. Would you like some?"

It is probably possible to be slightly less confrontational, and still get a message across Grin

Oh when I was pg with ds2, I told my neighbours and it came out that I had been left by his father.

'Oh not again' she said. 'Do you know, that's twice now...I think you actually want it this way' .

I can't remember what I said. I think I sort of walked home slightly dazed.

twizzlestix · 12/04/2012 20:00

I ve had a so called friend refuse to congratulate me or even speak to me since finding out which I find hugely insulting :(

oikopolis · 12/04/2012 20:14

your mum sounds amazing Hecate Grin

littlemissnormal · 12/04/2012 20:58

I had the same as Kittykitcat: a neighbour said she could tell I was pregnant as my face had got really fat....and like others have said she's not exactly of the chiselled cheekbone variety herself!!

NorthernChinchilla · 12/04/2012 21:30

Man following me up the stairs to the office (he worked on the floor above), notices that I'm taking it slowly, mainly because I'm 8 months pregnant and have sciatica.

Him, cheerful- 'Ooh, are you pregnant then, look like you're having a bit of difficulty?'
Me, smiling- Yes, 8 months!
Him- 'Well, it's your own fault then!'

Okaaaaay.....

signet2012 · 12/04/2012 21:31

My nan said to me when finding out I was pregnant.. "oh that's nice, mind you you won't be able to tell bump from the fat for a long time will you?"

On finding out I had SPD already at 4 months due to having HMS she said "oh well, we knew you wouldn't manage a pregnancy well and this would happen, didn't we... lets hope it has more of its fathers genes than yours!"

I Love my nan but there are times.............

FrillyMilly · 12/04/2012 21:35

When I was pregnant with DD I only had a bump. Didn't put on weight anywhere else and still had a waist that was clearly visible from the back. DH was trying to tell his mother this. He said to her look at her from the back. MIL responded with 'yes she has put on a lot of weight on her bottom'!!! Since I hadn't put on any weight on my bum I must have a fat arse all the time.

FuckedOfftotheFarSideofFuck · 12/04/2012 21:39

I met my MIL for the first time during my first trimester. She was a bit nasty - I think she had some issues about me taking her son from her or something.

Anyway, I was doing my darndest to bond with her and we were talking about cravings and I made some lame joke about no specific cravings, just food in general.

Cue her saying "Gosh, imagine how FAT you'll be by the end" (I was a curvy size 10 at this point).

Oooo this thread made me chuckle and all my fat bits wobble :)

Obviously totally unacceptable and we should be claiming compensation or taking retribution of sorts....but also pretty funny. :)

ItsMyLastOne · 12/04/2012 22:29

When I was pg I went from a size 8 to about a 12 (yes I put on more than recommended but whatever). MIL made so many comments about how big I was and how much weight I put on. I wasn't rude enough myself to mention that at least I was pregnant, what's her excuse for being a size 30?! Bitch!

SarryB · 12/04/2012 23:09

"you're as wide as you are tall"

Thanks. Yes I am short (5'1), no, I don't need you to point out my girth.

JustHecate · 13/04/2012 07:26

she's a mad old bat, oiko, but she's my mad old bat Grin

Hermionewastherealhero · 13/04/2012 07:56

"you can tell you are pregnant as your face has changed shape and is big and round now"- when I was 5 weeks by a person I hardly know, it made me cry as I believed her as how else would the cow bag know? Spent days asking husband and mum if my face was fat- they promise it isn't!

Then a really good friend when organising her hen weekend in may said "one of my work friends is pregnant and was worried that she will be so fat against everyone else but I told her not to worry and that you would be really fat by then too". Gee thanks!!!

DucketyDuckDuck · 13/04/2012 08:10

At 4 months from Dentist - how many are in there you are HUGE.....

2 days after giving birth, my Dad said "Are you sure there isn't another one in there".....thanks.

No neat bump for me, I am one of those who just blobs, my whole body morphs into a marshmellow. Yes I was big but leave me alone!

Babylon1 · 13/04/2012 08:23

From my friend who I'm meeting on Saturday.....

Well look on the bright side, you'll make me look like a twig, you need to get landing permission for THAT!!

Yeah thanks honey, needed that!! I'm a 12-14 normally and have an enormous bump but haven't put weight on anywhere other than bump (and boobs obviously) bur my belly sticks out further which is a first for me Blush

kat1885 · 13/04/2012 08:26

The usual:

"you sure there is only one in there?"
"that's gonna be at least a 10lber"
"you are huge though aren't you?"

My mum coming back from Africa where she had been working for 8 weeks:

"I cannot get over how huge your bump is" (I was 38 weeks when she got back)

Well, we should know soon if people's magical bump to weight knowledge is accurate as I'm due on Tue (So max 2 weeks Tue now with my NHS woo hoo).

PosiePaques · 13/04/2012 08:31

I find this thread really weird are we all saying that we want people to think we're slim even in pregnancy????

DonnaDoon · 13/04/2012 09:09

No Posie I just don`t think we enjoy being likened to buses ,lorrys, etc :)
