Sex ban! Low lying placenta

Been for my 20 week scan today - baby is fine and everything looks good, except my stupid placenta is blocking the exit! Got to go back at 34 weeks for a scan to see if its moved so fingers crossed, but been told no sex until then Shock

It's going to be a very long 14 weeks!!! Anyone else frustrated with me? Do they always say no sex with low lying placenta?

Oooh how strange I was told my placenta is low lying and will be rescanned but no sex ban for me shame

blondiep14 · 11/04/2012 19:48

I totally go off sex when pregnant - totally!
It would be quite nice for me if I had a proper reason!

I had low lying placenta at 20 weeks, completely covering the cervix, but wasn't told no sex. However, after an unprovoked bleed due to PP at 22 weeks it's off the menu now. Bah! Angry. Still, would rather that than end up back in hospital. :o

RightUpMyRue · 11/04/2012 20:26

You might have thought that could bump it out the way Smile

I've been told this too after 2 pp bleeds. Also no orgasm. I'm worried it'll happen in my sleep (orgasm not sex - my H isn't like that!)

McPopcornMouseNFries · 12/04/2012 09:14

Oh no! Shock that's terrible! But like poppy says, better than a hospital admission.

:o blacktreaclecat (why no orgasm though? What would that do?!)

Had this with both pregnancies. No bleeding but grade 4 pp both times.

I too was Hmm about the sex ban and more than pee'd off to find that the placenta had not moved at 34 weeks and. Was admitted to hospital until I had planned c-sections both times.

Some consultants were more lenient than others. Because I'd had no bleeding I was sometimes allowed home for a few hours or out for a meal. Mostly though I was on total bed rest.

But it can be a very serious condition and should not be taken lightly. I met a couple of midwives who had experienced pp when it had caused 'catastrophic' bleeds. Not good.

Chances are your placenta will have moved of its own accord by 34 weeks - the vast majority do. But a few weeks without sex is a small price to pay.

Btw, orgasm causes the womb to contract a bit and could cause a bleed.

kaymondo · 12/04/2012 19:57

thanks for sharing your experience cheerios - i hadn't realised that there were different degrees of pp, when did they tell you that you were grade 4? was that at your scan? Must have been hard being in hospital for a few weeks second time around with already having a DC. This is DC2 for me and i'm not sure how DS would react if that was the case, esp as he'll only be just 2 when the new baby comes.

i know lack of sex is a small price to pay for a healthy baby and know a couple of people who've been told placenta was in the way but it then moved so still feel pretty positive at the moment - just got to put up with DH moping (altho i wasn't told no orgasm like some of you have, midwife delicately pointed out that we could do 'other stuff' just not intercourse!

Yes, the grades refer to the positioning of the placenta over the os: grade 1 is a slight covering and grade 4 is completely blocking the os (opening of the cervix).

I cant remember if they use the grade system at 20 weeks but it's definitely used at later scans, like the 34 wk ones. It will probably say on your notes if you look.

Btw, despite what your mw says, the 'other stuff' you can do doesn't sound much fun to me . Tell your dh that it's good practice for when the baby's born and you won't be touching him with a barge pole Grin
