I am 27 weeks pregnant and have awful constipation! It has been over a week since I last visited the loo (obviously not for a wee :) they come what feels like every 10 mins) I have just started taking fibrogel bit only since yesterday and I'm not seeing an impact (I want it now!!) I am crabby and in pain.... Any help welcome!! Thanks

Prune juice will do the trick. Dont drink too much though or you'll get the runs. 1 glass should be enough.

missnevermind · 08/04/2012 15:13

Black coffee and a Polo mint used to sort me out.

MyleeneCrass · 08/04/2012 15:20

Three dried apricot a day did the trick for me.

PeahenTailFeathers · 08/04/2012 15:28

I've reached 34 weeks with no sign of constipation whatsoever by eating the following every day without fail: 1 large bowl of bran flakes or fruit and fibre, 3 or 4 dried apricots, 4 or 5 dates, a small box of dried fruit and a glass of orange juice. Sounds dull but you get used to it! The good thing is you can eat them all at breakfast or by mid morning and it's a great prevention diet.

Impatientwino · 08/04/2012 15:29

Try upping your water intake - my midwife said 3 litres per day minimum - will ease things along

Kiwi fruit are great as well.

OTTMummA · 08/04/2012 16:10

Yep dried apricot, always works for me, it didn't give me the runs either.

Cewafwb · 08/04/2012 17:52

Lactulose - works so fast and comfortably. the only thing that works for me. Just don't take too much. If you really blocked it will make you go almost instantly. Good luck!

MadMonkeys · 08/04/2012 18:10

Dried apricots. They're magic Smile

McPhee · 08/04/2012 18:17

I'm having trouble at 27 weeks too. Although I can go, its erm well just takes some effort Blush. And there's no bloody way I want piles either!

Coffee normally does it for me too, but even that's not really having the desired effect anymore. I might have to open the fibrogel myself soon as well.

Clandy · 08/04/2012 19:00

Ok so I am armed with coffee and 3 dried apricots have had loads of water/orange juice and fruit today even though it's Easter and it should be chocolate!!

Where can I buy lactulose (on a bank holiday???) this sounds like something I need!!

Thanks for replies

If you're taking all that, then I really wouldn't leave the house Grin

Clandy · 08/04/2012 19:07

Lactulose is the work of satan.

Clandy · 08/04/2012 19:21

Oh dear that doesn't sound promising.... Is it Satan as in makes you go..... Or just rubbish! I am fairly desperate....

Your midwife would obviously be the best person to ask

MyleeneCrass · 08/04/2012 19:23

Latulose is fucking horrible to take and I didn't find it worked.

Clandy · 08/04/2012 19:30

Take plenty of entertainment into the bathroom and take your time, I pushed too hard in 'constipation frustration' and got piles for a week! when you do attempt it, put your feet up on a little box or something and just don't push, relax!

Good luck! Smile

Angelico · 08/04/2012 20:01

Lots of orange juice is helping me but unfortunately it gives me devilish heartburn. Doc also gave me lactulose but only took one dose as OJ seems to be working.

Clandy · 08/04/2012 20:05

Ok so coffe and orange juice don't go well together Grin seemly run out of apricots so will try raisins!

No point going to the loo I will just be disappointed and may never get off!

Tried and hated lactulose. It didn't work and makes me throw up without fail.
My routine is an orange every night before bed but dh also cook with prunes a lot. chicken with prunes is fab and you can also wrap them in ham!

Always gets me going. and the feet on a little box advice works for me too.

SarryB · 09/04/2012 11:02

A glass of prune juice with your evening/biggest meal. And loads of water.

Wrigglebum · 09/04/2012 13:44

Pears are also great, or pear juice which I've just discovered you can get at lidl. I'm going to stock up next time I go as it's delicious. Or plenty of apples.

Keeping active helps too, try gentle walks to keep things moving.

Clandy · 09/04/2012 16:16

Rang docs today and got a glycerine suppository and lactulose and have been making up for lost time Grin shall note this advice and keep up a routine so it doesn't happen again. Can't believe it has been so horrible (although should count myself lucky that not being able to use the loo for a few days is the worse thing I can imagine!!)
