Not putting on weight yet

I'm 17 weeks pregnant with twins and am starting to worry that I haven't really put on much weight yet.

I lost a couple of pounds in the first trimester when I was really nauseous and struggling to eat (BMI before pregnancy was about 25 so average weight). I've only put on about 2-3 pounds over the past month which doesn't seem nearly enough after reading all the books/Internet advice, especially for twins.

I've got a decent size bump and had a scan last week where everything looked ok. I'm eating 3 meals a day but not many snacks but don't feel very hungry between meals (or have much time to snack at work). Should I be worried and try to force myself to eat more to gain weight?

I would say its very early days for you to have Put on much weight, even though it's twins.

As you lost a little weight at the beginning maybe things are starting to even out now?

If you are eating a nutritious and balanced diet, no one said anything when you went for your scan, I would take that as everything is going brilliantly.

With both my pg I didn't really show at all until after 20-25 weeks. And although you are carrying twins, they tend to be a little smaller than just a singleton. I think.

And you're not supposed to eat any more calories until your third trimester, so I wouldn't be concerned at this point. As long as you're eating well.

Don't force yourself to eat extra because you think you should. I promise, later in the pg, If your babies or body want more calories you will know about it! I don't really eat chocolate for example. And for the last month of ds1pg and through the first few weeks of bf, all I wanted was chocolate! I just assumed I needed the extra calories Grin as I was a lovely size 8 at the time.

But I'm not anymore Angry

Good luck with everything and congratulations Wink

i put on nothing up till 14 weeks. (am now 17.5 weeks but don't have scales at home, so not sure atm what my weight is). i think i'm supposed to be gaining a pound a week from 12 weeks onwards, and i know for twins it's more than that.

you probably should start thinking about just adding something to your diet that's high-quality but low-fuss. can i suggest buying a bulk pack of those protein bar things that gym bunnies love? the ones made from whey protein? look for ones that don't have any sweeteners in them, just normal sugar.

they're usually 250 calories, and can have up to 40g of protein which is just what you need for making twins!!

you can also sometimes find meal replacement drinks, but i often find they have soy protein in them, which upsets my stomach something horrible. for Western stomachs, whey protein is less likely to cause an upset. (Whereas if you have an African or Asian background, soy protein is probably a better bet.)

I technically, at 38weeks, have gained nothing. Size 12, BMI 24.

I lost a stone due to Morning Sickness and then have had pretty much no appetite since - I've re-gained about 5lbs in total, so will end this pregnancy weighing way less than I started.

I eat my meals, get my five a day, baby is growing, all be it on the lower percentile. Nobody is concerned.

Keep yourself eating healthily, don't worry about gaining weight because you think you should. Just eat WELL. Smile

I was underweight to start with BMI of 18. I'm 32+2 and I've gained 13lbs... according to all the books I should be aiming to put 2-3 stone on, which I doubt will happen. I'm eating like a horse so I'm not concerned, the baby will take what she needs from me first. I'm sure your twins will be the same :)
