Guessing baby position?

I'm 37 weeks and have been having a feel about to try and ascertain baby's position. My MW has confirmed that his head is down. Working my way from this point, I "think' he is lying on my left side and the little ball I feel in the middle of my upper tummy is his bum. When he kicks or moves, my stomach just moves in a rolling or wave like motion. Sometimes my bump flops to the right and then back to left again. While baby is kicking I haven't seen any outlines of hands, feet, or limbs, so I'm hoping this means he isn't lying back to back. Is this just wishful thinking on my part? And my guess work is exactly that. After all, how the heck do I know what a bum or leg should feel like whilst surrounded by amniotic fluid and encased in my fat and skin? :) I know that baby can change position once labour begins anyway but it would be nice to know if he was currently in a good or "less good" position.

I've been trying to do all the sitting forward and birthing ball stuff whilst watching telly, but have also spent lots of time with feet elevated to combat swelling, which I feel cancels out my efforts. :(

Try googling belly mapping and spinning babies. I'd link except am one handed typing due to feeding 11 day old DD. Sounds like you've figured it out already but it gives tips on what to look for. Dd was also laying down my left side and then turned to face my back during labour.

Cheers FlipFantasia, have had a look at belly mapping website and may give that a go tomorrow. :)
