Does wee smell more when pregnant? (sorry if TMI)

Sorry if this is too much information. But I have to ask, should wee smell really bad whilst pregnant. I thought it might just be my overactive sense of smell, but DH said it is definately strong and more unpleasant than, well, normal urine smells. I've had my urine tested at each antenatal appointment and there is nothing funny showing up. I have read around and can't find any mention, so am of course worried.

Can anyone put my mind at rest and tell me it is normal?

I havent noticed it

maybe you need to drink more water?

Feistybird · 06/02/2006 12:19

Doesn't your sense of smell get heightened by pregnancy?

Feistybird · 06/02/2006 12:19

sorry, didn't read properly.

Are you taking any vitamin supplements or eating/drinking anything different now that you are pregnant? Also if you are a bit dehydrated that can make things smellier.

cori · 06/02/2006 12:50

I have had this problem too. Dont know why, I dont have any infections or anything, so am putting it down to the hormone content.

Chloe55 · 06/02/2006 12:51

I have had stronger wee during pregnancy and I think it has been down to dehydration - I seem to have to drink more water so maybe this is the case with you too?

OldieMum · 06/02/2006 12:53

My wee is definitely smellier. It's the same smell I remember from (failed) IVF cycles, so it may be progesterone.

groat · 06/02/2006 13:15

this happened to me - awful smell. Nothing showed up when urine routinely tested but after birth found out I had thrush.

cupcakes · 06/02/2006 17:26

Agree with enid - you probably need to up your water intake.

alexsmum · 06/02/2006 17:30

don't know about the smell..but slightly off subject. apparently if you collect some of your pregnant wee and put a white flower in it, after acouple of days the flower will turn pink. how odd!

usandbump · 06/02/2006 17:47

I have this too

Most unladylike!! My checks have been normal too, I have put it down to lack of fluids and have been trying to drink more but then I'm constantly going to the toilet! Can't win, I don't think its anything to worry about though.

Rhian101 · 06/02/2006 18:09

I'd try drinking some cranberry juice - is very good for cleaning out your insides. I swear by it!

PotPourri · 06/02/2006 20:52

Thanks all. I had all sorts of theories, including the fact that I am renewing the waters all the time, so need more fluid, and also have more toxins/hormones etc to get rid of.

I will get on the cranberry juice asap. And up my water intake. TBH, I totally forgot that last time I had to drink 4 litres a day! I just don't feel thirsty this time - or maybe am too busy with a 1 year old to notice as much.

Thanks for the reassurance all

hey PotPourri, you were on the due Dec 04 thread with me - congratulations! when is this one due?

unicorn · 06/02/2006 21:00

I remember my urine smelt much stronger when pregnant with ds than dd...

sharklet · 07/02/2006 15:17

i always thought I'd be able to tell when I was pregnent again just be the different smell of my wee (I know TMI) So yes it smelt very different. I don't think it was indicative of anything bad as I had a happy and trouble free pregnancy.

Perhaps the other reason id that your senses and responses to certain smells can be heightened during pregnancy - so it might be that your more aware of the smell at the moment.

RedZuleika · 08/02/2006 20:54

I had this and it was nothing to do with low fluid intake. It was similar to the post-asparagus-eating smell. It wasn't just my heightened sense of smell either, my husband noticed too. No idea what causes it.

alexsmum: Am really curious how you discovered this...??

cutekids · 08/02/2006 21:04

When you're preg with a boy.

cutekids · 08/02/2006 21:07

really don't wish to alarm anyone, but I was told that drinking Cranberry/pineapple juice whilst pregnant was very dodgy! please be careful. no expert by the way!

Gemmitygem · 09/02/2006 04:26

I'm convinced it's the pregnancy vitamins, plus being a bit more easily dehydrated.. Also noticed it!

Highlander · 09/02/2006 09:51

I notice the whole asparagus thing more when I'm preggers. It's totaaly foul.

mawbroon · 09/02/2006 10:58

TMI but if I didn't drink enough water when pg (and still now whilst exclusive bf) then my pee smells like smoked sausage DS has just started sleeping through the night so it is bad in the mornings just now as I am missing out on glugging a pint of water through the night.

I am assuming it is a combination of hormones and dehydration

Hello all I'm new here but have been reading plenty! Just thought I'd post on here while I'm waiting for that elusive positive...

Had sex during my ovulation window but as I only started trying I stupidly hadn't record last months AF dates properly. Was using ovulation strips so know it was within range.

A few days ago had what I expect was implantation bleeding- pink mucus at first followed by a little pinkish bleeding and brown discharge. Stopped by day three. My cycles aren't super regular (usually between 28-32 days though) but I ALWAYS bleed for six days and it's always heavy. This wasn't at all.

Also accompanied by cramps with a pulling sensation, fatigue and a headache/backache or two. Mostly, I'm generally super intuitive with everything and I know my own body really well - I always know when I ovulate even without testing - and I KNOW something is off.

So far testing negative but seems too early based on most posts I've read. Thoughts?
