Just curious. I'm 9 weeks tomorrow and had given up coffee completely but am now starting to want it again so wondered if one mug a day is okay in the 1st trimester. Also have given up wine but hopefully when I start to feel better am considering a couple of glasses a week. Just wondered what everyone else is doing or has done. First time round I gave up both except at weddings had a glass of bucks fizz, feel a bit more confident 2nd time round.

compo - I went off coffee and tea, but now i'm 22 wks i fancy it a bit more.
I do have a coffee now and then, one a day won't do baby and harm.
I will not and have not had any alcohol at all, not risking even a drop, I don't think there is enoughe vidence to say if it will or won't effect the baby, and there is no way i am risking the health of my unborn child. sorry this is something i feel very strongly about.
You never know what it could do.
Of course the choice is yours.

since I found out i was 4 weeks pg in August I think I have drunk 2 small baileys at Xmas and quite a few cups of decaf coffee. I am not interested in drinking at all but will prob make up for it in May after bubba is born!

Enid · 06/02/2006 12:08

I went off coffee and tea like diddle when I got to about 22 weeks started craving coffee - I was having one very strong cup in the morning but started having trouble sleeping so I now have only decaff.

I am having two small glasses of wine, twice a week and have been since I was about 17/18 weeks.

tonton · 06/02/2006 12:14

No coffee or alchohol until about 2 weeks ago. Now nealry 30 weeks and am having a coffee every morning a couple of teas. And about 3 drinks a week (small wine or small beer.)

Arabica · 06/02/2006 12:52

Am 14 wks. No alcohol (can't stand the smell at the moment) and just decaf coffee. Normally I love my coffee, but I've become indifferent to it and can't understand why I used to salivate every time I smelled freshly roast beans!

Tabs · 06/02/2006 13:00

About 5 cups of coffee in total throughout pregnancy (decaf the rest of the time), and no alcohol at all. You might like to read this if you are considering drinking. I know we all have different views on the subject and will do our own thing, but I'm with Diddle on this one!

HandbagAddiction · 06/02/2006 13:06

I went off alcohol completely for the first 12 weeks so that was OK. Since then, I probably have on average one glass a week - sometimes maybe two, but always with food.

With respect to coffee - well I normally only ever drink decaff anyway, but the coffee place at the railway station in the mornings doesn't do decaff so I normally have a standard latte (only one shot of expresso though). I've also done this throughout my whole pregnancy.

Each to their own and everything and I do respect other people's choices, but sometimes I think we can be too cautious.

pacinofan · 06/02/2006 13:18

Have had one or two small glasses of wine once or twice a week, max, sometimes less, no spririts. Drinking Eisberg alcohol-free wine quite often now instead of having a 'normal' glass.

Have never been a fan of coffee until I became pregnant this time, and I was really craving strong coffee very early on. (Actually made me quite convinced I was expecting a boy as completely different cravings from first pregnancy (girl), but was quite wrong we are expecting a girl!) Used to drink 1 cup of cofee a day, now just drinking tea but quite a lot, probably 4 cups daily.

OldieMum · 06/02/2006 13:20

No alcohol and am drinking decaff coffee. I started drinking decaff when pregnant last time (three years ago) and now can't tolerate real coffee, which gives me palpitations.

FirstNikki · 06/02/2006 13:21

hi compo,

I will be 7wks on friday and I gave up alcohol (although had a couple of drinks in Jan but not touched since bfp) and coffee when started to ttc but have decaf tea and coffee now as a substitute got headaches to start with but now I feel so much better for less caffeine.

cori · 06/02/2006 13:29

Coffee daily, i think you can have about 3 cups, dont drink tea.
Alcholol, maybe once a month. Fortunanetly the first tates great, then by the time I am finished I start to feel sick so dont want anymore.

emmawill · 06/02/2006 13:29

I had the odd glass of wine with my 1st pregnancy and also struggling with giving up smoking and didn't totally quit til I was about 14 weeks my 1st baby is very healthy but weighed 7 lb 1oz, my 2nd baby i didn't smoke at all and I quit drinking totally as soon as i found out I was pregnant and he was 9 lb 3 oz. I don't know for sure if drinking and smoking had a direct affect on the differences in weight but i believe it to and I also think i very very luckly my children are very healthy.

OldieMum · 06/02/2006 13:39

Smoking is associated with low birthweight.

Jasnem · 06/02/2006 13:45

Don't like coffe, so none.
(Normally live on tea, but gone off it from early on, so only drink water)
Had one glass of wine at 6 weeks, made me ill, haven't had any alcohol since. I am now 38 weeks.

LilacBump · 06/02/2006 13:47

i've cut out coffee (even decaf) but have the occasional can of coke. i drink decaf tea.
i haven't had a drop of alcohol since finding out i was pregnant.

emmawill · 06/02/2006 13:52

Don't think drinking is assoicated with low birth rate is it though? Isn't recomended at no more than 1 small glass a week? I was so protective over 2nd, I think on the 1st I found it diffcuilt really appreciating what was growing inside of me and what I was reasonable for its an amazing thing happening and 2nd time round I knew what my body was doing and that I could not take any risks and it's only 9 months after all.

Jasnem · 06/02/2006 13:55

Alcohol is not associated with low birth weight, but is with other developmental problems/learningprobs.
Although the recommended safe limit here (uk) is 1-2 units per week, in many countries it is 0.

Imafairy · 06/02/2006 13:59

I drink tea - caf at work, de-caf at home, and have maybe a cup of 'real' coffee once a day. Drink wise, am probably have 2 glasses of wine a week on average - which may be none for a week, and then two nights of 2 units.
I think we're all aware of the pros and cons of everything - this is my choice.
And congrats by the way!!

emmawill · 06/02/2006 14:09

Yes excatley also stress is the worst possible thing for pregnancy and if the odd glass of wine destresses then it does you good which in turn is good for the nbaby. I think also we're made to feel so guilty about everything when we're pregnant and then as mothers.

Imafairy · 06/02/2006 14:36

well said emma!

Jasnem · 06/02/2006 15:30

Sorry if I came across as preaching at you - not my intention. Not everyone is aware of the facts, though. I wasn't - I chose not to drink because I didn't enjoy it during my first, not because I thought a tiny amount of alcohol would harm the baby.

emmawill · 06/02/2006 15:40

I think a lot of people do go off it, with my 1st i didn't go off anything and loved my spicey hot food too, but with my 2nd I went off everything including anything even slightly spicey or strong tasting. I've never drunk coffee but I drink diet coke like its going out of fashion and there's been report that can damage their teeth, can't give everything up as we would be the miserable expecting mothers not to mention short tempered

Enid · 06/02/2006 15:44

no one knows the 'facts' Jasnem though

I drank moderately through both other pgs and both dds are absolutely fine and both weighed over 8lbs at birth

Jasnem · 06/02/2006 15:52

I didn't mean "facts", really. Should have said "pros and cons", just bad wording on my part.
