Found out i was pregnant at the weekend and duly phoned the drs yesterday. after much ringing round i finally phoned the hospital for them to schedule my first midwife appointment and then they apparently book in my dating scan.
my appointment is not for another 7 weeks so i will be 13 wks (cross fingers) at the appoinment and was told they would book me in for a scan the next week. but how will the scan appointments not be booked up?
this seems really late as i thought scans were normally 10 weeks not 14
not sure what i can do? any help? is this normal procedure now?

Is it a dating scan or a combined nuchal scan?

I had my dating scan at 10+3 with dd and because I needed a nuchal scan with ds, it was later at 13+3. But I think for the nuchal bit to be accurate it has to be between 11 weeks and 13+6.

The first scan is usually at the 12 week mark so you'll only be two week out - if you're worried, then you can always have a scan done privately.

thanks :)
think just a dating one.
i guess only 2 weeks out but my worry is that all the appointments will go if they are going to try to do it the week after?
how many pregnant women are in my area!!!!!!
not worried so far i just feel like maybe i should be monitored before then and also would rather tell people after the scan but i'll probably be popping out my clothes before then!

But if this is the way they do things then they won't be out of appointments... I guess they know what they're doing Grin

Calling it a '12wk scan' is a bit of a misnomer. They're done somewhere around that time, usually between 10 and 14 weeks and the window narrows if you're having a nuchal scan. Just check if they're planning on it because if you leave it too late then that could be a problem but otherwise the timing's not too much of an issue.

If you need a nuchal scan then according to my ultrasonographer friend it should really be done by 13+6, so perhaps you need to chivvy them a little bit?

you can probably get it earlier if you insist. That's what i did with dc1 (and will probably have to do again)

Hello, for my DS1, I had the 1st scan at 15weeks, hospital was overbooked and although I called everyday for 1 month to find out if someone has cancelled their scan, I wasn't lucky... I could not have the NT measured of course but there is a Quad Test that can be performed between 16 et 20 weeks to readjust the DS risk when the screening and NT scan could not be carried out. At the time I did not realise I could have gone private. So if you are very worried you can always go private, if not the Quad test will give you some answers too. Congrats on the pg.
