Strep B - has anyone else been told this by MW?

I had a strep b ++ infection with DC1, results arrived a few days after he was born early so no AB in labour or extra monitoring after birth - luckily he was fine. I was tested for strep b because of greeny discharge at about 37 weeks ( sorry for TMI).

DC2 was fine -no probs.

Now 34wks with DC3, same greeny discharge has arrived this week so i called MW for advice. She has told me i can be tested for strep b at appointment on Thursday. This will be a swab and urine test.

She said that in line with new guidance i will only need AB in labour if strep b shows in urine. Not if is just on swab.

Has anyone else been told this? I am a bit confused as i have read quite a bit about strep b and assumed AB would be needed following a positive swab.

Thanks in advance.

Every hospital has their own policy. If you want the most current guidance and management relevant for you, perhaps give the labour ward (or triage if there is one) a call. They have access to the policy.

Most Trusts generally treat with IV abx in labour no matter where or when the GBS was found. But some will have a different policy.

As TheDetective says, different trusts can have different policies. Having said that, a positive swab before the current pregnancy isn't a good predictor of carriage this time around. It's not a case of 'once a carrier, always a carrier' as GBS carriage can come and go.

Beeboles - def speak with mw. l was told this by a very rubbish mw (not my own lovely one) who told me it was a shame as it could end badly (complete cow! it is very rare it will cause problems please dont worry). This had me worrying so badly that hubby came home to me in a pile of tissues and babling! If you are worried push the matter with your local hospital - ring the labour ward and express your concerns, hubby did for me, we got AB (twice in fact due to length of labour) without any problems, it did not mess up any of the other drugs and we felt safe. Believe me they do not want you to stress yourself this late in the game.

Thanks all. Have got Strep B again. IV AB for me.

I rang the hospital myself and checked the information, my midwife was not up to date with her facts and i do have to have the AB with Strep B just showing in swab but not urine. MW also told me could still go to MW led unit with Strep B which i found to be incorrect. I am in the process of changing my booking.
Its worrying when the community MW does not know the facts.
