3/5 Engaged what does it mean?

Hi Ladies,

I think I am being a bit dumb the MW told be that 3/5 engaged does that mean that baby's head is deep in my pelvis and that things could start happening soon. The MW explained that his head is tucked into his chin and the top or his head is downwards. Does this mean that it is just the back of his head has to move down. I know he has to turn slightly as he his at an angle.

I have been wondering this as sorry TMI I feel very moist almost like something is leaking but as only a pG women does I have been checking my pad and it is not wet through but starting to get damp, it doesn't smell sweet but do have what feels likes cramps in my back and a very hard bump. Only 35 + 4 xx

xx

It means you'll have a baby in the next few weeks Wink

Honestly, it means very little other than baby is on his way down but that doesn't tell you when labour will start - DD was engaged at about 36w and was evicted at 42w Hmm

The cramps and hard bump are probably Braxton Hicks, so nothing to worry about. However, if you're concerned that your waters might be leaking then call your MW - better to call her and be told that it's not, than to ignore it and to find out that it is.

Not seen you on the April thread for a while, you should drop by and say hello (there have been several arrivals already!)

Hiya so weird I was about to post the same thing, I'm 35+5 and apparently 4/5 engaged and also not sure what that means - although there is a thread in the child birth section and it seems to mean nothing in relation to labour day.

KatAndKit · 29/03/2012 17:37

I'm 38 weeks and apparently the head is still "free" according to this mornings appointment. I hope this doesn't mean anything as far as labour day is concerned.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 29/03/2012 17:38

That is werid to justhayley I hope I have anothe couple of weeks to go still have things do. xx

It means very little. Trust me as someone who is 10 days over due with a baby that has been fully engaged for 3 weeks. I think it can depend on which way they write it as they can mean 3/5ths palable so 3/5ths of babies head still movable rather than 3/5ths of the head engaged. Hope that makes sense! The only reason I know that is I had 2 different midwifes and they meant it in different ways!

justhayley · 29/03/2012 17:42

I feel the same and have LOADS left to do! Everyone keeps telling me I look like baby's going to come early (have no idea why - all non medical people saying this) but it did panic me slightly that he's already almost totally engaged I need at least another 3 weeks!

Hotpotpie · 29/03/2012 18:11

Im fully engaged with three weeks to go and loosing my mucus plug however I feel quite certain in the knowledge this baby aint shifting until the midwives evict it lol it certainly hasnt been in a rush to do anything else

Yummymummyyobe1 · 29/03/2012 20:27

KatAndKit from what I'm learninsg baby will come when baby wants to come.

Thanks feekerry I'm hoping it means 3/5 of his head is still free as I still have a while to go.

Same here justhayley they have a book open at the office and most people think he will be early. I might keep my legs crossed and go over and then I win the pot. Wink

Fingers crossed Hotpotpie that baby won't need an eviction notice serving.

My little one is firmly in my pelvis this evening and I have the waddle & seriously bad back to prove it. Wink thank goodness I am on leave. xx

Doesn't it also have something to do with if it's your first baby or not?
I'm sure that if it's your first it can engage ages before labour but with subsequent babies they don't engage until they're nearly ready to come out!

Dozeyland · 29/03/2012 20:49
