Hello,
My NT scan came out to be very high which 4.3. I am 27 yr old and this is my 1st pregnancy. Got pregnant after ttc for 2 yrs. I am very nervous with these results because I so much love my baby already.

My reports were :
NT 4.3
Fb hcg .52 mom
PAPP-A .17 mom

I believe my blood reports are much on the lower side which is adding to my worry.

We have decided to go for amino which is on 17th April.
Pls share your experiences ladies. I am really looking for some thoughts...positive or negative doesn't matter.
I don't know how reliable these tests are but I just can't help to cry whole day and this 3 week wait is so disheartening and even the doctor doesn't seem to be very hopeful :((((

Forgot to add that I have concieved through iui. I hope these fertility treatments are not responsible for such odds :(

I had a NT of 3.5 and rubbish blood results back in December. Given a 1:42 chance of Downs. I know how you feel, I felt sick and couldn't stop crying, couldn't sleep and head was a mess. I had wanted a baby for over 10 years and then it seemed like I was so close but it was all going wrong. I went for an amnio and am delighted to say I got the all clear Smile if I turn my odds around it was actually about a 97.5% chance if having a healthy baby! Don't worry about the amnio itself, it doesn't hurt, just feels a bit weird! I though a big needle would mean agony and was so happy that it just felt like a blood test. It is all over very quickly, they just draw off a couple of tablespoons of fluid and pop it in a jar. I just felt an odd sensation, but it was not pain. Take someone with you to hold your hand and don't look. It is a nice extra chance to see your baby on the screen as the doctor will use the ultrasound to see what he/ she is doing. Good luck and try to focus on the fact that nearly all amnio results come back clear. Big hug x

goingmadtrying · 29/03/2012 10:11

sending you big hugs no experience myself but didn't want to read and run, what was your overall odds?

batteryhen · 29/03/2012 11:06

I am not sure about the blood measurements - did they give you an overall risk? Mine came through at 1:140, so I went and had a more detailed scan in london - thinking they would give me a better assesment. They gave me odds of 1:63!
I had an amnio, and I agree with amethyst - it doesn't hurt, I didn't look, and as long as you lay still it's fine. The worst bit is waiting for the results. I got the phone call 48 hours later and it gave me the all clear :) Good luck to you xxx

nearlymumofone · 29/03/2012 11:50

I'm afraid I can't be of much help. Other than to say you don't HAVE to have the amnio as it does carry a risk of miscarriage (usually 1%). What is your overall risk number? Mine was 1:153 with NT of 2.9mm. I have decided just to ride out pregnancy as I would not terminate for down syndrome anyway so I couldn't see the point in putting the baby at risk by undergoing the amnio. If you would not terminate the pregnancy then maybe leave the amnio? Obviously this is a difficult decision and one that you can make. Good luck xxx

batteryhen · 29/03/2012 12:29

One of the reasons I had the amnio was to be more prepared, just in case. I opted for the amnio over the cvs as there is less risk. However, 1% risk is the national statistic - each hospital has thier own stats. I queried my consultants, and was told that he had not had any miscarriages following amnios in the past 3 years. I found this reassuring xx

Anya234 · 29/03/2012 12:39

Thanks ladies. I would never terminate just because of DS but I will be left with no option if there is some other serious problem that I can't help but terminate.i don't understand these odds but they are as follows:
Biochem. Risk + NT is >1:50
Double test is 1:244
Age risk is 1:874
Trisomy 13/18 is 1:50
So all these risk except age is above cut off. I am really afraid because of such high NT scan result :(

Thank you everyone I so much appreciate your support. Thanks again

hi ANYA234 I completely understand how you are feeling. My story is slightly different in that I had a great NT measurement only 1.4mm but rubbish bloods and therefore an overall risk of 1 in 36. It put me into a complete tailspin and I spent all my spare time searching for evidence that my bloods were normal. I realised that i couldn't go on not knowing what if anything I faced so my DH and I decided on an amnio. I was terrified of the procedure especially as I have a history of miscarriages however I went privately to the best consultant in our area and had the test at 15 weeks. I wouldn't say it was pleasant but it didn't hurt as such but it was over quite quickly. The results came back 48hrs later and everything was clear no DS, Edwards, Patau or cystic fibrosis.

Lots of people will tell you that the odds are in your favour - which they are, but if you're like me all you will be thinking is what if I'm the one? For that reason I would hightly recommend having an amnio to put your mind at rest. I now feel able to enjoy being pregnant again and feel so better.

Thinking of you xx

nearlymumofone · 29/03/2012 16:57

Meant to say have a look on the Antenal tests/choices board, there's lots of threads on there which are similar, lots with positive outcomes. Good luck x

Loislane78 · 29/03/2012 19:47

I hope things work out for you Anja :)

Can I ask a question about this too as a bit confused. NT seemed to come back fine (not sure what is a good ratio?), but I don't think I've had any specific bloods done. Did you request this/were offered it because of your scan results or does it happen as standard?

Best to you all x

missmapp · 29/03/2012 19:56

i had a Nt of 4.2 with ds1 and 4.9 with ds2 ! I was given high odds for downs with both ( 1 in 4 for ds2) .
With ds1 we didnt test, but we did with ds2 so we would be more informed, but we had decided not to terminate if he had downs. As it was, neither have downs, and are generally healthy. Ds2 has a gentic disorder and congenital heart disorder, but neither are serious. I was v.worried during both pgs, and I sympathise hugely. I remember feeling v.pressured in various consultants offices to test/terminate. all i can say, is talk, talk , talk with your partner and stick to your guns.

I hope all is well , you are in my thoughts.

Anya234 · 30/03/2012 06:38

Thanks for the response everyone. I am very worried and always in tears. I just hope things turn out to be fine.

I would suggest that you ring Arc - Antenatal results and choices charity. They are amazing.
I had cvs and that was fine and didn't hurt. My t21 angel was a clomid conception and I was told it isn't related- just bad luck.
Good luck

Anya234 · 30/03/2012 10:39

Bkacktreaclecat sorry to hear that. Why was your NT?

OP posts:
blacktreaclecat · 30/03/2012 18:38

Our NT was 11mm so greatly enlarged and bloods were wonky as well. Also 2 other soft markers- absent nasal bone and reverse flow in ductus arteriosus meant something was seriously wrong.
I'm 26 weeks now after array cgh ICSI. :)
Fingers crossed for you xx

Anya234 · 31/03/2012 09:33

Ohh how is everything now? Hope you have a healthy pregnancy. They could see a tiny nasal bone but unfortunately they did mention about reverse flow in ductus :(
As of now I am just waiting.

OP posts:
blacktreaclecat · 31/03/2012 19:00

This time we got a 1 in 25000 risk for t21 with a 1.4mm nuchal and nasal bone present. We have had scans at 7,9,12,16 and 22 weeks done by a fetal med consultant and all is fine touch wood.
So this is hopefully our rainbow baby.
It was the hardest thing I've ever been through and the waiting was torture.
Thinking of you.

Belgrano · 01/04/2012 15:46

I had a 1:46 risk and my ds is fine. Just wanted to add to the 'it can be fine even with scary odds' brigade. Our nuchal was 4.6 mm. Now pregnant with Dc 3 and v scared about 12 wk scan. Let us know how you get on though. Fingers crossed for you. X

Anya234 · 02/04/2012 10:25

Thanks belgrano! I try my best to stay positive.
All the best with your scan.

shoeprincess2 · 02/04/2012 16:28

Hi Anya- I have just read your thread and thought i would post as I have just recently been through the amnio. On 8 March, i had my 12 week scan and was told that the nuchal fold was measuring 4.1mm. The specialist midwife was recommending the CVS/amnio on that alone (and the fact that i am 35). I still asked to have the bloods done for a combined risk factor for DS, but it still all came back as 1 in 5. I was absolutely gutted and couldn't concentrate on anything for weeks, until i had the amnio last Monday. The procedure itself was fine- slightly uncomfortable, but I have had more uncomfortable smear tests! I received the call on Thursday- clear for DS, Edwards and Patau's. I am just waiting now for the full karotype results and then the scan on 25 April. I do know how you feel though- you cannot focus on anything apart from the fact that you may have to deal with some awful news and have to make a heartwrenching decision. I was mentally exhausted by the time I got the results on Thursday. I just slept for hours on Friday night. Please try and keep strong. S xx

Anya234 · 03/04/2012 05:41

Hi shoeprincess2. Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad to know it came all clear and good luck for future. Ya this wait is terrible...no matter what I do I just can't concentrate. Waiting for my Amino test which is on 17th April. Will keep posting. U also keep us updated.

OP posts:
blacktreaclecat · 03/04/2012 07:48

That is such a long wait- how far on are you? Could you have cvs instead?

Anya234 · 03/04/2012 10:21

Unfortunately I was a bit late for CVS because at the time of the scan I was already 12w4d. So my Doctor told me to wait until I enter my 16th week.
