Can I request a GTT?

Don't know how to ask for this without sounding like a complete hypochondriac. DH (who is a Dr, but not a GP) thinks I need a glucose tolerance test and thinks I should ask the GP to arrange one.

I had 3+ glucose in urine a few weeks ago at 24 week midwife appointment. She seemed concerned and said she'd organise a test. When I saw her last week (26 weeks) there was no glucose (but I had been following a no/low sugar diet as she'd told me to). She'd rungs hospital (not the usual one for our practice so she doesn't know their procedures) who had said they weren't bothered about the urine test and I didn't need a GTT.

That hasn't resolved my anxieties and I'm still convinced I've got GDD. I have 'normal' BMI so they won't test on those grounds (women with a certain BMI get automatically tested here, don't know if that's the same everywhere). I'm weeing constantly, especially at night, and am always thirsty but they are obviously normal pregnancy symptoms anyway. I am convinced my bump is an awful lot bigger than at this stage with DD, but of course all pregnancies are different and my muscle tone isn't as good as it was. DD was unexpectedly on the large side at just over 9lb.

So I can rationalise all of this but still feel very worried about it and just want to know once and for all. However, I don't know what to say to a GP, especially as the midwife has said I don't need a test.

Of they won't do one at the hospital, why don't you get a home blood sugar testing kit and monitor yourself? I think you can get them in boots.

Well, that was easy! Saw a GP, told her what I've posted above and she took blood, arranged GTT for Monday and that was that. What was I worrying about?
