Hi, I had some very light spotting yesterday when I wiped. I was sent to EPU today thinking I was 6+6 pregnant to have a scan . Scan showed a gestational sac only (no yolk sac or embryo) measuring 5+1. What does this mean? Am I miscarrying? I am confused. They took bloods to check HCG levels & will take more thursday to check levels doubling as they should. My LMP was 8th feb but we started ttc on 14th (very lucky to concieve quickly) so surely I could only be a max of 6 weeks anyway. I'm really trying to stay positive. Anyone else had this happen and all been ok?

I had early u/s at 5 weeks= only saw sac and no yolk

I had early u/s again at 7 weeks= saw sac, yolk, and heartbeat.

It is not over yet!!!

Hi, I'm having similar issues to you. Some light spotting, some heavier red bleeding, sometimes nothing. Like you I've had a couple of scans - at 5wks 4days nothing at all showing and I was at a very low ebb, yesterday at 6wks 1dy a sac was just visible measuring 6mm, so it had grown a lot in just 4-5 days and I was elated (then home to more bleeding and the whole cycle of not knowing starts again). I was told it was far too early to see a yolk or 'pole' at this stage and have been asked to go back at 8 weeks.

hGC levels are supposed to go up by at least 60% every 48-72 hrs, not necessarily doubling exactly. I guess every pregnancy/body is very different so if you google the hormone levels the allowances vary considerably.

I totally understand your comment about staying positive. A good friend pointed out to me today the need for this to reduce the amount of cortisol my body is producing! She is right. Stay positive. Good luck.

Thank you for your replies. I am trying to stay positive. No news is good news I guess!
Nurse just phoned to say HCG levels 'look good' at 2180 and to have them repeated on thurs & they will call again with results.

Just had my scan at 13 weeks... all is well :)

I know it is easy to say this, but please try and keep your mind off it. Get into a good book/movie/TV series!

I'm really pleased for you milk. Congratulations.
The spotting seems to have tailed off which is good & there is no pain. Fingers crossed the bloods on thurs look good & so does the scan next week. The rational side of my brain says it prob is approx 5 weeks since conception but it is def 7 weeks since LMP, surely this is the same for all??? And others who concieve 12-16 days after period measure more accurately for their dates???? I'm so confused by it all. Can anyone shed any light on it all?

Could you have a different cycle length?

Cakeplease · 27/03/2012 20:13

Who knows?? Maybe?? I guess I'll find out thursday or next week. I really hope all is ok & it is just wrong dates. Has anyone else had this experience?

I have had this experience, a few times and there are only 2 explanations (and I also have personal experience to back this up).

At 6 weeks you should be able to see more than the sac. The explanations for this are one of two things:

  1. Not got your dates right (I did this with DD, I was convinved it was all over and then 1 week later growth had caught up and there was the bean with a heartbeat)
  2. Growth is not right for dates and this is counted as a bad sign in terms of assessing viability and can often mean a problem. However, this can be hard to assess from one scan as in the early days just being a couple of days out can mean the difference between a fair bit of development. At 6 weeks you would normally expect to see the embryo and they should be able to measure the crl.

HCG levels is a promising sign as they are often lower in a failing pregnancy. Spotting in early pregnancy is also nothing to worry about - again happended with DD but I have also had m/c's where there was no bleeding at all so on its own it is not always a bad sign. Pain and bleeding with clots is more worrying.

Nobody can tell you the answer but it is important to try and stay calm and look after yourself. Milks advice is good - be nice to yourself, watch shit TV and just focus on each day and the scan will be here before you know it. 1 week should give enough time to be able to have a much clearer indication - if the embryo is visable and growth is on track that would be a clear positve sign.

The waiting game is so hard. I have been there so many times but good things are worth the worry, honest they are. Like icequeenkate says try to relax. Easier said than done I know but nothing you can do will change the outcome so just be nice to yourself and wait it out.

Got everything crossed for you.

I had an early scan due to spotting . The only thing visible was an empty sac, measuring 5 and a half weeks, so I was told to come back for a re-scan in 10 days. I convinced myself I had a blighted ovum. When I went back for the scan, there was a visible fetal pole and heartbeat! If you are up to 6 weeks (and sometimes even more) it can still be too early to see anything. Did they comment on the position of your uterus? I was told that mine is tilted (retroverted) which can make it harder for things to show up on a scan.

I also had this - came off the pill (half way through a packet - naughty!) and just never had a period. Went to have an early private scan to date the pregnancy as didn't have a clue when we had conceived, and thought I may have been around 7 weeks. There was just an empty sac on the screen. I felt absolutely devastated, and was sure that was the end. Had to wait for 2 weeks before they rescanned me, by which time I was almost 7 weeks, and saw the little heartbeat beating away :o now I'm 28 weeks, and apart from some quite heavy bleeding at around 9 weeks, everything has been great. Chin up, the wait is the worst thing in the world.
