I found out yesterday I'm pregnant :) Been TTC for a while so we're v. pleased!
This morning I had a hibiscus tea and then after I'd drunk it thought I had better check it was OK and have read that it is a stimulant of uterine contractions and causes a drop in the all important progesterone and now I'm panicking. I don't know what possessed me even drink it!
Has anyone else ever drunk it in the 1st trimester?

It's actually not that easy to get rid of a pregnancy so I would't worry!
I'm sure you will be as fine as I was eating pâté and brie lol....congratulations and try not to worry !!

Northernlurker · 26/03/2012 07:51

Never heard of it but linz is right. Pregnancies are amazingly persistent. One cup of doubtless very diluted tea is not going to do anything. I would lay off it now for you peace of mind but I'm sure you're fine.

SoupDragon · 26/03/2012 07:58

I agree that one single cup is extremely unlikely to cause a problem.

StrawberrytallCAKE · 26/03/2012 08:15

Hello spotty I am at the same stage as you and had a peppermint tea two days ago which I was told was a definite no no yesterday. The tea lady told me unless its a huge amount it isn't a problem. Don't worry.

McPopcornMouseNFries · 26/03/2012 09:11

Why can't you drink peppermint tea, strawberry? I've been drinking gallons of the stuff for my indigestion Shock

FoofFighter · 26/03/2012 09:13

Peppermint tea is in no way a no no!

KatAndKit · 26/03/2012 09:34

All of the fruity teas that you buy in the supermarket are ok according to my midwife and doctor. Something you buy as a medicinal remedy in a health food shop might need checking, but if you just have a pack of Twinings herbal/fruit infusions you have nothing to worry about. There is no need to worry about every single thing that passes your lips!

OP, in my first week of pregnancy (all-unknowing) I had a mega-cold and took millions of over-the-counter meds which are very strongly contraindicated in pregnancy.

DS is now 9mo and doing fine. Don't worry :)

Also, my grandmother's generation drank a half of guiness EVERY DAY and still produced viable offspring!! I really really think that unless you're taking concentrated hibiscus extract in huge doses, you and bubs will be fine.

Enjoy your fruit teas... oh by the way and I couldn't find any official evidence on Pubmed supporting raspberry leaf tea as an instigator of labour, so that's good news too!

cerys74 · 26/03/2012 09:53

Actually there's a paper on how raspberry leaf extract applied to strips of uterus may cause contractions (published in 1970). There is a world of difference between direct application and oral application though, so I remain unconvinced...

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 26/03/2012 09:57

spotty the hibiscus in tea is actually very weak so it shouldn't be a problem. is't not like you had a powerfull extract intravenously Wink, it's just a cup of tea (well, sort of).

iloveminieggs · 26/03/2012 10:58

so is peppermint tea ok then everyone?
I having been upping my peppermint tea to reduce my caffeine intake.
Now also bough decaff tea and coffee.

FoofFighter · 26/03/2012 12:49

Peppermint tea is totally and utterly fine yes

McPopcornMouseNFries · 26/03/2012 13:28

Phew

spottymerlin · 26/03/2012 14:26

ah thanks, i am feeling better now that nothing has happened! I have been waiting for such a long time and now it's here! I am crying with joy one minute and panic stricken the next ha ha!!
I took a test on saturday and it was negative, but my period was late and i just knew something felt different so i used the other half of the twin pack on sunday night and a little faint line began to appear, i just couldn't believe it, we both kept looking at the pregnancy test all night in sheer disbelief! ha ha! i don't know why we didn't believe it really becuase we had been trying, but it's such a crazy thing to find out!

Hotpotpie · 26/03/2012 14:33

I thought Raspberry leaf tea wasnt supposed to cause the contractions, just make them more efficient when you are in labour, thats why ive been drinking it anyway!

StrawberrytallCAKE · 26/03/2012 17:26

Well when I asked at Neals Yard Remedies in Covent Garden the first tea the lady said not to have in the first trimester was peppermint, I thought that was odd to but I am just repeating the words of an expert. I'm going to do more research now to see if I can find any evidence of this on the web! Sorry for any panic caused.

QuietNinjaTattoo · 26/03/2012 17:31

Congrats! Get used to crying with joy and feeling panic stricken the next moment. Ds is 2 and that still happens Grin
