Help! Went near sheep and baby lambs...

We went to an open farm today with toddler DS. I went in the shed where there were sheep and newborn lambs - separated by two barriers but very newborn. Didn't see the signs until we'd already been in there. They said no contact for pregnant women with the sheep - none of us touched the sheep or lambs, washed our hands copiously, cleaned shoes in the dip thing on the way out.

BUT when we came out of the shed I saw a few other pregnant ladies who had sensibly not gone in at all and I am now freaking out a bit. Does anyone know about this stuff? Guess there's nothing I can do now anyway... :(

Don't panic - it's just if you get blood/birth fluids into you like, via a cut. You could even lamb a ewe if you wore gloves and be fine.

I think you have to have pretty close contact, and even then there's a low transmission rate. Pls. don't worry.

I would phone your midwife if I were you just make sure, she should know what to do when you tell her how close you were etc.
Do it this afternoon and it's off your mind then.

You didn't pet or feed the sheep, just stood a few feet away and looked at them. I'm pretty certain you'll be fine, but check with your MW next week if it will put your mid at rest.

it's fine if you didn't touch them
the risk is really low anyway, but being near lambs really won't hurt you, i promise

As long as you didn't lick them you will be fine...

Mmmm lamb am having some for dinner tonight......tasty!!

I agree, you didn't actually come into contact with them physically so you are fine.

MrsHoarder · 24/03/2012 16:14

You will be fine. Read the NHS information on contact with sheep during pregnancy. Basically you should avoid lambing and handing fluids from the sheep and even then the risks are low. Being in the same barn as some lambs is fine.

If you do get anything with flu-like sypmtoms tell your GP you have been around sheep, but you would have to be vvv unlucky for that to happen.
