a friend who is 31 weeks pg has been admitted to hospital again today and has now been advised that she'll have to stay put until she gives birth. She's been in and out of hospital these last few weeks with bleeding, this last lot of bleeding being her 8th.

Can anyone tell me please what this condition is, what causes it, what are the risks etc?

TIA

it's when the placenta either partially or entirely covers the cervix, making vaginal birth impossible.

the risk, of course, is heavy bleeding and death of the baby (and possibly the mother) in the even the placenta tries to deliver before the foetus.
