14 weeks and midwife couldn't pick up a heartbeat

I'm 14 weeks pg with DC3 and went to a drop-in midwife clinic this morning.

I am under a huge amount of stress at the moment and asked the midwife to see of she could detect a heartbeat with the doppler/sonic aid. I hoped this would give me some reassurance and ease my mind a little.

She tried for a while and was unsuccessful in finding a heartbeat. She didn't seem too concerned.

As you can imagine this has added to my stress and I am now really worried.

What do I do? Shall I make an appointment with my GP or wait until next week so another midwife can have a go. Anyone have any experience of this?

They can usually hear it from about 16 weeks so it may just be a bit to early yet. And can also depend on the position of baby and placenta. If you have been cramping or spotting then get to a hospital or try to arrange a scan but if everything feels normal then maybe see in a few days if they can't try again :)

Hello. Most midwives won't attempt to find a heartbeat until at least 16 weeks.

If she had been concerned then she would definitely would have sent you for a scan.

Could you perhaps ring your midwife/midwives and explain your worry?

i know its hard but try not to worry with 1 of mine the midwife couldnt find a heartbeat at almost 15 weeks but he was fine alot of midwifes refuse to even try till past 20 weeks as it can be very hard before then to pick one up depending on baby's position and it just causes worry like what your feeling now

Hey, yeah mine didn't even offer to check for the heartbeat at last check (16 weeks)! When I asked she said, next time. This is because they sometimes can't find the heartbeat this early on so they don't want to frighten people unnecessarily... as you have been :) So please don't stress!

Thank you so much everyone for your quick responses, you have eased my mind a little.

caffeine I haven't had any spotting or cramping and have no reason to think anything is wrong apart from just a general anxiety. I seem to be really worried this time round.

I have an appointment with her again at 16 weeks so hopefully all will be well then.

They drive me mad when they do it this early! A consultant did me at 14 when i hadnt even asked and i was in floods of tears all night after he found nothing!

Theyre so small at the point theyve got so many hiding places in there

I'm sure everything is fine it was too early for her to check , i wouldnt let anyone near me again till i was about 26 weeks lol
