terrified. is this normal?

It all started with a brown discharge this afternoon. i phoned the doctor who sent me to emergency dept. While there i started bleeding (not a lot or bright, kinda like the tail end of your period). Doctor examined me and said my cervix was closed and that my urine was still testing positive on pregnancy test. I'm about ten weeks and I'm terrified I'm having a miscariage. My pregnancy symptoms have also been disappearing (nausea and tiredness in the last couple of weeks, but since today my breasts seem a lot less tender too). i won't get a scan for a week, has anybody had these symptoms? what happened to you? Is it a miscarriage or could it be something that happens? Since i'm back from the hospital the bleeding seems to have slowed/stopped.

Yes I had these symptoms in both pregnancies, but actually worse with a lot bleeding

Nearly every woman I know had some bleeding, so it is very common.

I now have two beautiful daughters so it was fine in the end, but yes it is terryifying at the time. In my case they didnt know why I bled

If you were miscarrying your cervix would be open so very unlikely

By any chance do you know if normally your period would normally come at this time of the month? It is common to have a breakthough bleed when your period normally would be

Hi and sorry you're going through this. Is there any way you could have a scan to rule out a missed miscarriage? Is there an EPU nearby? Symptoms aren't reliable as they continue or not and show positive pregnancy tests even in a missed miscarriage. I'm sorry to be so negative but it happened to me and I'm surprised that's all the doctor could do for you.

Having said that, there are hundreds of times where brown gunk means nothing and even red blood is ok. But you won't know without a scan unfortunately.

If I comment from tge other end do to speak ...I had a mc but it was bright red and periody straight away. I've read lots of threads like yours where everything is fine.

Nothing anyone says on here will stop you worrying unroll you get your scan. Is it your dating scan in a week? You can ring and see if they have had a cancellation and bring it forward.

Insist they do a scan asap

Unless you can afford a private one. We ended up forking out for one as I couldnt bear to wait. It cost £100

So sorry you are having such a worrying time. I have had similar on a few occasions, one resulted in my DD and one resulted in MMC. Nothing will tell you for sure except a scan. I agree a week is too long to worry yourself silly. Can you get to an EPU? A lot are self referral or GP referral and will scan you that day. When I bled with my DD I thought it was all over so it can have a positive outcome. Are you in any pain? Boobs feeling less sore if often a sign something not quite right with me but I don't think that is a universal symptom. I prod mine all the time to make sure! Slightly crazy habit. Try and get a scan so you can put your mind at rest. Take care and do let us know how you get on. Big hugs x

The week wait makes me think that they are waiting for nature to take it's course. still bleeding and discharge this morning, and my abdomen is starting to hurt. so i don't think it's looking to good. I know that there is nothing that anyone can do if the worst id happening but it just seems cruel to leave me in limbo for a week. Even if they can't do a scan, I would have thought that at ten weeks they could have listened for a heartbeat.

(10 weeks will be too early to listen for a heartbeat... they can struggle up to before 20 weeks to hear one! but they may be able to see one on a scan - they usually do at the 12 week scan)

To me it sounds like they are making you wait a week rather because everything looks ok. And brown bleeding is definitely better than red. If you've had more though you must definitely phone them to let them know (they will be thinking it has stopped).

I'm sorry you're still having discharge and still in limbo. You can see a HB at 6 or so weeks, so I'd push for a scan if you can. Are you near an EPU? Thinking of you x

I'm afraid they (hospitals and midwives) can seem incredibly flippant/unconcerned about early bleeding. Partly because its so common (with not necessarily a bad end result) and also because if you are miscarrying, there is nothing they can do about it. Doesn't help put your mind at rest obviously but that's just how it seems to work.

My last pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. I had period like bleeding. They just told me to wait for the bleeding to stop then a week later take a pregnancy test. That was it! But at that stage not even a scan could have conclusively prove anything. In this pregnancy I had very, very heavy bleeding at 11 weeks - all over floor, soaking through multiple pads etc and they said to go to a&e but probably more because of the potential risk to my health rather than anything they could do for the baby. I'm now 19 weeks and, touch wood, all seems to be fine.

Hopefully you manage to get an early scan of some sort and I'll have fingers crossed that everything is okay for you!

yes picklesarnie, they did seem to have a bit of non plussed attitude. when i asked if i should come back if the bleeding/ symptoms got worse, the doctor said that unless there was a large volume and i was concerned for my health (much heavier than a period) i should wait til scan as there was nothing anybody could do. DP has suggested we buy a couple of pregnancy tests to take over the course of the week to see if the result is still positive. I'll chance my arm and ask if they'll slot me in if they get a cancelation.

Hi Qazxc. I am 9 weeks pregnant and have had 2 lots of bleeding so far- one was browny as you say like the end of a period, which then cleared up, and the second was lots of red blood which was incredibly frightening. i was examined by a doctor who like yours said my cervix was closed and that she did not suspect miscarriage. I had a scan yesterday and all was well!! So please do not give up hope just yet.

If you are still bleeding ould you go to A&E to get a scan? thats where I went when I got all the red blood, they examined me in A&E, who then sent me up to Gynae, who then arranged a scan for me 2 days later.

I hope it works out for you.

Sadly things have gotten worse overnight. I have not started passing red blood and clots (like a heavy period) and am cramping. so i don't hold out much hope. DP is dreadfully upset but trying to keep a stiff upper lip for my sake. I am trying to keep positive by telling myself that these things do happen and are quite common.; and that hopefully when we try again we will get the healthy baby we dream of. i want to thank everyone for their support, it has meant so much to me to be able to share with people who understand what i am going through. wish you all the best of luck. i will update on what happens after the scan.

I'm so sorry as well. There's great support on here if you want it. Just give yourself loads of time and allow yourself to be up and down for a while.

On a practical note, you could buy some Internet cheapie tests to check that your hcg levels do eventually return to 0, but obviously right now you just need to cope with what's happening and look after yourself.

got admitted to hospital yesterday and sadly this morning the scan showed an incomplete miscarriage.
I was offered 3 options:
one was to let nature take it's course which would probably involve more pain and dealing with what came out and i didn't feel up to that.
the second was to give me medication to speed up the process, again i was told that it would probably involve more pain (i'd been in pain all day and night, and the odd paracetamol they were giving me was not taking the edge off at all) and spending another night in hospital; again not an option i relished.
the third was to have a surgical procedure (evacuation of retained products of conception, not a brilliant name), which would have me back at home in the evening and is a quick and simple procedure.
I opted for the surgical route and am glad i did. i'm back at home, bit sore but the raging pain is gone.
i have to go for a check up at my gp in two weeks, but luckily the operation was a success.
Me and DP have spent most of the time texting and ringing people who knew i was pregnant, that was quite upsetting. but now i feel relieved that it's all over (the miscarriage obviously, not the pregnancy). i know that we will probably be up and down for a while but i feel that the worse is behind us now. and hopefully when we try again we will be successfull.
i would like to thank again all the people who took the time to drop me a line, it has meant so much to me.
and hopefully my story might help someone in the same situation as i found that some nurses attitudes can come accross as quite brusque or insensitive, but then again to you your world might be falling apart, to them it's another day in the office. having said that the nurses in surgery and recovery were absolute angels. but sometimes you need to hear the story of someone who has gone through it, someone that you can identify with. so i hope that posting this might make someone feel less alone and scared.

Aww, I'm soo sorry to hear of yr loss. Been watching this thread....I too have suffered 3mc's, 2 were mmc's and I too had a d+c both times, I know exactly where you're at right now. Take time to come to terms with everything, sleep loads and just take care of yourself. You and yr dh are in my thoughts and prayers, I thought yr last post was so very brave, thinking about helping others in the same situation. You are an inspiration. Please take care xxx
