32 Weeks & Measuring 37cm...Going for growth scan today...Little Concerned!

Hello,

Trying my best not to be worried as told not to by Midwife and Consultant...but easier said than done!

Went to see my Midwife for regular check-up last Wednesday and was measuring 33cm for 31+1wks. Not a huge measurement but after having a good feel around my bump explained she had some concerns that I may have some excess fluid so sent me for an appointment with a consultant at the hospital yesterday.

Consultant initially questioned why the Midwife had sent me as the measurements weren?t too extreme but once she measured me she actually got 37cm for 31+6wks...a little alarming at the difference in just 5 days, although I guess everyone can measure different and that a tape measure can't be that accurate!

Anyway, I have a growth scan this afternoon. Not really been explained what the complications can be and neither seemed to be over concerned. Everything has until now been going really well...urine check always comes up clear and no major discomforts and I've been pleasantly surprised how much I've been enjoying my first pregnancy after friends sharing some of their nightmare stories!

Sorry for the rambling...first post! But, has anyone else had a similar experience...could it be the baby has just had a growth spurt? Goggled 'Polyhydramnios' and I hadn't have done! Confused

Don't worry, happens a lot. Notoriously difficult to measure babies from the outside. I quite enjoyed my growth scan in late pg- was another chance to see baby!! Bear in mind though that sometimes the sonographer won't interpret the scan for you but asks you to go to your mw/ consultant again to say what it means- I was really frustrated by this!!
Hope it all goes well.

Bear in mind that the scan measurement won't necessarily be accurate either, the weight estimate for 40w can be a lb or 2 out and generally they overestimate the weight rather than underestimate it!

From about your stage I measured a good 8-9 weeks over for the rest of the pregnancy. When I was due I measured 48 weeks (not that I could understand anyone ever getting to 48 weeks Hmm). I had the whole.. oh it's going to be a massive baby. I googled polyhydramnios and scared and worried myself senseless. Anyway- to cut a long story short Ds was born 8lbs 13 so big but not massive (I had a very easy labour and birth by the way- just tens and gas and air), he is perfectly proportioned, bright as anything and I wished I hadn't let it all worry me so much.

So (although i know it's easy for everyone else to say) but try not to worry. I think with me it was a lot of fluid (when waters broke it was like a tidal wave!!) and I retained a lot of water too.

Take care, good luck x

oh yes, just to mention I had to go for extra growth scans as I was so bid- even the sonographer told me not to take any notice of it as the scans are regularly up to 30% inaccurate. x

I had polyhydramnios, was very uncomfortable and worried myself through the final 7 weeks. I was massive. Waters broke on the due date in a spectacular fashion and I gave birth to a big (8lb 10oz) healthy boy. Mostly is just means a big baby but, as is best, they check it out. Try not to worry. F x

I also had polyhydramnious and my baby was small. You must keep an eye on the movements and get checked out if there is any change.
