Would you go swimming in a bikini?

Or is that horribly chavvy? I know people would stare at the huge naked bit in the middle and that's not particularly pleasant but I'm not sure if I can be bothered to buy a maternity swimmie when there are only a few weeks to go and I just fancy trying a few swims. Not much else is particularly unpleasant or bulgy (no more so than before) but I don't want to look like a plonker if it's really not the done thing...

Don't be daft, get your bikini on and get in that pool! Who makes these bloody 'rules'? >

molly3478 · 19/03/2012 16:10

I have done and dont see why not.

Hpbp · 19/03/2012 16:17

I used to swim with my first LO until the very last moment... 16kg of extra weight at the time. Some mums came to congratulate.
Went on hols in Jan 12 with a 10 week belly for this second pg, looked like as if I ate too much during these all inclusive hols... but who cares if I am don't ? :)
so go ahead, go swimming if it can make you feel good

sillymillyb · 19/03/2012 16:51

I would do it - in fact, I'd prob be less self conscious with my pregnancy belly than when I am my usual pre-pregnancy flubbery self!

runlolarun10 · 19/03/2012 17:00

I decided to bikini it up in the pool instead of buying a maternity costume as they're all hideous or hideously expensive. The only issue I have is with my ginormous boobs spilling out the top.

MrsHoarder · 19/03/2012 18:24

I did from when I grew out of my normal costume to when I needed to buy something new because my bikini didn't fit either. Who is going to notice for the few metres from the changing room to the pool edge?

katiegolightly · 19/03/2012 18:37

Good points all round - think I will just go and jump in like a big whale and enjoy it!! Thanks for giving me the confidence to bare all... just wanted to check it wasn't too obscene!! Smile

Agree you should just go for it. However just to let you know that I was in Mothercare this weekend and they had a lot of maternity tankinis in the sale for £7.50. They aren't brilliant but may be worth a look if you're feeling self-conscious.

PickleSarnie · 19/03/2012 18:56

Absolutely not. But that's only because I wouldn't wear a bikini when not pregnant. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a pregnant belly on the beach though. It's my back fat and general wobbliness I'd be trying to hide!

BelleStar · 19/03/2012 19:55

Pregnant bellies are amazing! Definitely don't worry about wearing a bikini. I did last summer hols when 30 weeks and like Hpbp some people congratulated me and said how lovely it was as you don't often get to see the bumps properly. Again, my main concern was my expanding bottom and boobs which wouldn't be hidden whatever I wore!

justhayley · 19/03/2012 20:48

Do it! I would but my boobs spilled out o mine pretty early on so I bought a tankini - which I havnt worn!

HSMM · 19/03/2012 20:57

I splashed out on a swimsuit, because I have never been able to wear a bikini Blush. Swimming just felt great and I swam every week up to about a month before my due date when I couldn't climb in and out of our local pool!

Catsycat · 19/03/2012 21:45

I would never wear a bikini - but that goes when not pg too - I would look like Moby Dick. If you felt confident in your bikini before you were pg, and it is still fitting you now, then I'm sure you look great - I am most Envy!!!! Go and enjoy!

henrysmama2012 · 19/03/2012 22:01

Definitely a bikini - so much nicer & more comfy!

SarryB · 20/03/2012 16:32

I'd be wearing one all the time if I didn't live in Scotland...if I was going swimming, I'd much rather wear a bikini, even though I'm covered in stretchmarks!

OMGBFP · 20/03/2012 16:53

If anybody is staring I think it'll be mainly as you don't see that many people in a public baths in a bikini for some strange reason, rather than looking at your tummy :)

I would wear a bikini as it's only when I am pregnant with my tummy out there that I feel confident about my body (strangely!)

Enjoy your swim :)

VeronicaSpeedwell · 20/03/2012 17:37

I was just pondering this this morning -- I quite fancy a dip, but am trying to limit my mat wear spending. I will if you will Grin.

katiegolightly · 20/03/2012 18:10

Veronica - deal!

My doula took me swimming in the last few weeks of pregnancy because I was so miserable and uncomfortable.
I wore a bikini and I wouldn't wear one normally but actually felt less self conscious as for once my tummy was supposed to be bigger than my bum.
I got a few lovely comments actually with my bump on display including a serous swimming man in his late 40's who reminisced about how exciting it was when his wife was pregnant and they were waiting for the baby to come
