I am having one tomorrow, just to see everything is as normal after several miscarriages, the hospital have arranged it. By my LMP I'll be 5+2 weeks, can anyone tell me if they have been scanned at this stage and what I can expect to see if anything? TIA :)

I have, tits, there was a yolk sac, just a black hole on the screen. But they were able to tell it was in the 'right' place (?ectopic).

chocolateandcoffee · 18/03/2012 20:03

I had one at around 6 weeks, also after a few miscarriages. It was about 5 years ago and not in the UK.

I remember they did the scan internally, Through the vagina, It was lovely to see Ds when he was so tiny.

good luck tomorrow

I was scanned at 5 weeks and three days with my second pregnancy, and at the time they ouldnt detect a heartbeat, but could see the baby. I went back ten days later at 6 weeks and 6 days, to confirm whether it was a healthy pregnancy or whether the baby had died. It was at that time good news, and if you are lucky you may well find you can see the heartbeat.

Unfortunately, just two weeks after my scan at 8 weeks and 6 days, my baby's heart stopped beating. I found out at a scan, hoping everything was normal.

But please dont panic if you find they cant detect a heart beat, it may well be that the baby is still too small to detect it, or as it was in my case i wasnt quite as far gone as i thought i was.

Had one at just over 5 weeks due to bleeding - 6.5 weeks by LMP but my later dating scan meant I must have been just over 5 at the time of first scan. I saw two empty gestational sacs. 2 weeks later one had an embryo with a heartbeat and the other was the same size and still empty. The embryo is asleep now in his crib!

lilmamma · 18/03/2012 20:27

my dd had one very early and it was an internal scan, and you see a little blob, and a flickering heart,no shape of a baby as such, but the little heart beat was so sweet, good luck for tomorrow :)

ShowOfHands · 18/03/2012 20:30

You don't expect to see a heartbeat until 6 weeks.

I would go to it expecting to see v little indeed. I have had two v early scans and saw nothing at all at one and a gestational sac at the other. Both healthy pregnancies and scan was at 5 and a bit weeks both times. It was merely to locate the pregnancy and nothing else at that stage.

TruthSweet · 18/03/2012 20:46

I had a scan at what they said was 5w and there was a heartbeat (well a tube was pulsing!), then one a week later and a very obvious heartbeat. Fastforward to the 12w scan and it appears I am 13w not 12w.....

The first scan was to see where the baby was as the GP suspected ectopic and to see how far along I was - I didn't know I was pg until that day so it was a bit manic! I think if they had thought it was 5/6w and there were no suggestions of ectopic they wouldn't have done the scan then.

Good luck with the scan.

Bearcrumble · 18/03/2012 21:46

If all is progressing as it should, they can't guarantee you'll see a heartbeat until 8 weeks but usually you can at 6. I wouldn't worry if you can't see one at 5 weeks.

justhayley · 18/03/2012 22:32

I had one at 5 weeks - there was no heartbeat so don't panic about that. I was shown the yolk sack and told it was in the right place. I then had another at 7 weeks and saw a heartbeat so they knew it was progressing.
Good luck, I hope it all works out for you. Xxx

milk · 19/03/2012 07:18

At 5 weeks they could see the sac but no yolk. They said I had to come back in 2 weeks to see if I was pregnant or if I was going to MC.

For 2 weeks I freaked out.

At 7 weeks I had another scan and baby was fine- had yolk and heart beat.

So if you see nothing at 5 weeks don't freak out!!!

Midgetm · 19/03/2012 07:36

Yes - no heartbeat but a yolk sac so confirmed it wasn't ectopic like previous pregnancy. In terms of miscarriage it won't tell you much so early as very unlikely they will see a HB unless you are a bit further on. Good luck. And Luke the others have said, don't panic if no HB, just early.

OMGBFP · 19/03/2012 09:12

Good luck tits Thanks

Hpbp · 19/03/2012 09:19

Hey, good luck today for you early scan, it is just to confirm as Midgetm said that the pg is not ectopic, single or multiple, and that your ovaries are normal, I had mine at 6w+2, could only see the sac and yolk, no embryo, no HB but 10 days later at 7w+4, embryo, HB... everything was present and functioning. Now at 21w and feeling the baby move. So don't worry and take some tissues with you, it will be emotional anyway... and keep us informed

randomimposter · 19/03/2012 09:21

Scanned at 6+3 (LMP) measured at 5+5 with HB - abdominal scan.
By 8+5 had caught up, am now 11+2 (last scan at 10+6).

5+2 sounds very early, so don't panic too much. But sac should be visible.

Good luck x

EmptyCrispPackets · 19/03/2012 09:24

I went last week as I've also had several misc and had some pain, thought I was about 5+3 they couldn't see anything on scan so I was naturally gutted, as this happend twice last year. I had my bloods done though and they were over 1000 and usually it's hard to see anything unless beta hcg is over 1500. My repeat bloods were 2750, so more than doubled - I'm also off for a scan today and crossing everything that they will actually find something and this pregnancy isn't running down the same path as last years.

Good luck OP

DD looked like a small white blob inside a larger black blob. No heartbeat at that point (5 weeks). TBH it looked exactly the same as the MMC I'd had a few months earlier, although that was at 10 weeks so obviously not viable. A further scan a couple of weeks later found a heartbeat and she is now a healthy 4 month old baby Smile!

Also at the 5 week scan they were able to tell it was in the right place and not ectopic, found the source of some bleeding, and identify a cyst on my left ovary, which are apparently common in preg and nothing to worry about.

Remember a 5 week scan is only 2 or 3 weeks after fertilisation, which doesn't give much time for development!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 19/03/2012 13:39

Scan done, they saw the sac but nothing else although they said that's fine, back in 3 weeks for another. Thanks for all your messages. now to commence 3 weeks of worry

Same here OP.

Saw a sac, around 4-5 weeks, possibly something within it so I'm back in 2 weeks. I'm strangely fine about this as I was back and forth weekly last year and the anxiety heightened each time and I had a constant feeling of doom. I'm think now what will be will be.

They also saw a corpus luteum in my left ovary which is apparently a good thing as this is what keeps the pregnancy going until the placenta takes over.
