That baby smell

What produces that distinctive and lovely baby smell?!

I'd always thought it was something all babies had, but I've noticed recently my friend's baby really doesn't have "the smell" at all. She just smells like a person, sometimes date I even say, smells a little unwashed or "beddy", even though I know she has a bath every day! They're very diligent about using unfragranced baby washes and washing powder. And this got me thinking, are we going to lose the baby smell now we're all so conscious about being eco and akin friendly?!

On reflection, a bit concerned about posting this for fear of being flamed by those who take life a bit too seriously. So if you happen to be that way inclined, please note this is a lighthearted look at the insignificant things in life! I know I won't really care what my LO smells of when he or she comes along ??

Bf babies usually smell nicer than bottle fed babies in my experience. I was sure DS lost some of his nice baby smell when I had to switch to bottles. Also introducing any solid food does it too.

I agree that bf babies tend to smell more 'baby' than ff babies, but that might just be the ones I've had close contact with. My own babies always smelt wonderful of course (except when they had just filled a nappy, and even then ebf poo doesn't smell anywhere near as bad as when they have formula or solids)
But yes, lack of baby bath, baby lotion, baby powder, etc will lose us some of what we consider to be the baby smell. We've just been conditioned to expect it.

How strange! I was talking about this to my sister just today! I absolutely love that newborn smell when they are just born before their first baths...its that warm and sweet smell of the waters I suppose that gives them that first smell.

I also think that babies may give off that special scent that only mothers can smell...I know babies smell their mothers scent and are soothed by it, so why can't it be the other way round too?!!

I don't know, but I wish I could put my 2 month old's baby smell in a bottle and smell it for the rest of my life! I will miss it so much when he grows up!

I think it's a bonding thing - noone else's will ever smell as nice as your own!

Oh that lovely smell.

I can remember one day walking into my bedroom where DS2 was sleeping, he was about 2 months old. That baby smell just hit me, so clear and strong it made me cry.
