When I had really bad cough recently (am now 32wks), dr and pharmacist said no cough mixtures are recommended in pregnancy. I ended up with a chest infection Sad. The only thing I found helped at all with the horrendous painful cough was hot water with lemon juice, ginger powder and honey. Every time I coughed the baby would kick me - I didn't get any sleep at all so every sympathy! Hope
you feel better soon.

I was told by pharmacist only glycerine or honey for coughs if you are pg.

RealLifeIsForWimps · 14/03/2012 02:39

Definitely not- Codeine linctus is pretty hardcore. A lot of pharmacists won't even sell it anymore as too many people abuse it (not saying that you are, just that it is pretty much top of the "hardcore cough medicines" league). Call your midwife and see what she says.

I am a Pharmacist and only recommend glycerin lemon and honey bottles or simple linctus. Would not advise codeine linctus as its been linked with breathing difficulties in the foetus.

I feel your pain - now 3 weeks into a bad cold and being induced in 5 days time. Only thing I've been advised is Glycerin, Lemon & Honey and not even been able to have that due to having gestational diabetes. Best thing I've found is lemon & Ginger in hot water and lots of vicks vaporub on my back before bed. Hope it goes soon for you!

My GP prescribed codeine linctus for me when I was about 32-34 weeks pg with DC2 and had a terrible cough. It not only helped my cough, but helped me sleep through the night - absolute bliss. I would not take it though unless your doctor specifically prescribes it for you (I think it's a prescription drug anyway, isn't it?). As others have mentioned here it is a strong medicine.
