Weight gain - is 6 1/2lb enough at 20w?

I'm currently 21wks pregnant with my first child. I weighed 9st1lb at the start and have gained 6 1/2 lb so far. Is this normal - the only comments I can find on line relate to ladies gaining more than they think they should.
Any opinions appreciated.

(I should mention that I am 5' 61/2" (the 1/2" is very important!!!)

If the midwives have been measuring your fundal height and are happy with it, and everything looked fine at your 20w scan, I'd say you're fine. It probably is less than a lot of women gain by that point, but everyone's different and many women (myself included!) gain more than they actually need anyway. You might find you start to gain more rapidly as the pregnancy continues, or you might be lucky and not gain much.

I've just gone back and checked an online pregnancy weight tracker that I used. I had gained about 9lbs by 21w, and I was only about 8st 4lbs pre-pregnancy. I'm 5'4". So I think you're fine.

I had put on about that by 20 weeks and was really worried, I pretty much had no bump at all just looked like I had eaten a roast dinner. Actually I had a Hugh water retention bump from the start until 13/114 weeks then it went totally which freaked me out!
I'm now 33+3 & have put on 1st 9lbs. had a growth scan at 23 weeks which was fine, & had baby measured again at my 4D Scan at 30 weeks - again all fine. I only started getting fundal height measured from 25 weeks and they have been spot on.
I wouldn't worry too much you may just be a slow starter like me.
They will take all the babies measurements at your 20 week scan & make sure he/she is growing well.

Can I ask if you had a BMI in the normal range to start with?
If you were over the ideal to start with your weight gain will more than likely be less.

I'm not sure if that's normal, you can get them calculator things that keep you on track on the internet? I'm now 34 weeks and I haven't weighed myself for a few weeks... I was 7stone 9 pre pregnancy and I'm now 10 stone!!!I think it all depends on everyones frame and bmi pre pregnancy.I've gained a lot but only have a small neat tidy bump...but my legs and bum are now huge..sometimes I wonder if my baby is actually in my bum! Lol. I've had to have growth scan to and all was good. So if there's any concern from your midwife, she will tell you

This is my 2nd pregnancy and I'm 17+5, I have gained no weight at all!

I saw the MW on Monday and she said that my BMI was 25 to start with so that isn't unusual to not gain much at the start. She checked my bump and all is grand with the baby.

I had hyperemesis this pregnancy and ended up in hospital for a few days, so I really think that's something to do with it - all the vomiting and lack of appetite meant there was no weight to go on, but my decently sized frame to start with means that DC is okay in there.

With my 1st pregnancy I'd say that I put on a bit of weight by this stage but can't remember how much.

Hi don't panic about your weight gain if you are eating well. I had a v high BMI of 41 prior to pregnancy and at the beginning went down 6lbs in the first 12 weeks for no reason as I was eating and not really sick. Anyway as a result at 33 weeks I am only 8lbs heavier than I was originally my midwife told me that the baby takes what it wants and leaves you with what is left. The only thing she did say was to make sure I had a varied diet with lots of fresh fruit and veg all the usual recommendations really. The only thing I have really started to increase is my intake of milk to help with calcium as I have had a few problems with my teeth.

I'm 13 weeks and still down 7lbs from my BFP (lost 9lbs but have put 2 back on since morning sickness has gone).

I'm thankful in a way because I put on 5stone in my last pregnancy.

ahhhhhpushit · 14/03/2012 12:02

Should say my BMI is 22/23.

MillyStar · 14/03/2012 12:08

It's fine as long as your bump is normal size when they start measuring it!

I know a few people who've gained barely half a stone the whole pregnany and come out of hosp slimmer than to begin with!

I'm not so lucky i'm 36 weeks tomorrow and i've gained about 2.5 stone lol

Yummymummyyobe1 · 14/03/2012 20:52

Hi I second what has been said I haven't gained anything since 20 weeks in fact I have lost a few pounds in recent weeks. MW is happy enough with baby and how he growing. MW says it all depends on things like your build and at 33 and a half weeks I am 1st 5lbs heavier then I was pre pregnnacy. xx
