To buy or not to buy .. new cot mattress for new baby?

I am having baby number 2 in a few weeks and am shopping until i'm dropping for all the new baby kit again.

I know all the books say you should buy a new cot mattress for each new baby, but the cot mattress my 2 year old daughter has had for 18 months is really good quality (with a totally zip off and very thick cover which I have washed regularly). My daughter has never been sick on it and I'm just wondering whether anyone else has taken the view that it is unnecessary to buy a new mattress. Hope this doesn't sound mean and uncaring .. i'm just wondering what others would do in this situation.

Any comments/advice welcome!

I didn't buy new (DDs now 3 and 5) - and DD1 was sick, but like ours, had washable covers. I'm pretty sure that using a cot mattress between siblings is ok.

You don't need a new cot mattress for each new baby.

I bought a new moses basket matress for dd2, she lay in that in the cot for the first few weeks and then went inot cot with dd1's matress TBH. I didn't think about that but it was and still is in very good condition.
Maybe i should get a new one for number 3 though!
