Myself and my partner decided not have the tests for spina bifida or downs. However at my second scan the sonographer pointed out things like "babies face is fine, eyes, nose and mouth are fine, no cleft lip, spine is good, measuring thigh bone and nothing to worry about baby is fine" she went on to show us that the heart and stomach are fine too, along with the limbs etc. anyway my point is...is this a normal dose of information from the sonographer with no info about the spina bifida or downs? it just seems like a lot. or did she infact confirm no abnormalitys even though we specified in the notes not to tell us either way?
I hope this makes sense!

This is normal, although the blood test doesn't test for spina bifida, they check that by looking at the spine I think. But that's the same amount of info I got at my scan

Gingerbreadlatte · 12/03/2012 19:17

In my memory, that's normal. It's called an anomaly scan. They are looking for things that are not right/normal etc

HappyCamel · 12/03/2012 19:18

Normal, it's an anomaly scan.

Rachy1983 · 12/03/2012 19:19

i was curious about the fact i stated in my notes i dont want to know about my risk of downs or spina bifida and yet she was telling me the head is a normal size and the eyes and the spine..

Yep that's a perfectly normal 20 week scan, i love it when they show you the chambers of the heart. The Sonographer has to check for abnormalitys that may require treatment when baby is born, It's her job, she was not going against your wishes, i had a positioning scan at 26 weeks and was once again shown the heart, brain and spine.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 12/03/2012 19:20

Normal. But why have the scan if you didn't want to know?

Happenstance · 12/03/2012 19:22

sorry that was 36 weeks, she has to put in your notes, head circumference femur length and so on, she was just doing her job.

thisisyesterday · 12/03/2012 19:25

totally normal

the marker for down syndrome is the nuchal fold measurement which would have been done at the 12 week scan, but obviously you wouldn't have had that measurement done.

the 20 week scan is looking for anomalys, so they check EVERYTHING. If you didn't want to know about ANY possible problem with your baby then perhaps you should have declined the scan full-stop?

if you only requested not to find out about spina bifida and down syndrome they would still do all the other checks

Rachy1983 · 12/03/2012 19:26

i understood that i would be told if there were abnormalities or not i just wondered if she had given me to much info. are the people saying 'normal' also people who requested not have the spina bifida and downs tests? thanks

as I said, the information about down syndrome would have been given at the 12 week scan.
they measure the nuchal fold on the back of the neck.

did you have that done?

thisisyesterday · 12/03/2012 19:28

lol sorry, am cross-posting with you. apologies

thisisyesterday · 12/03/2012 19:30

am just reading up on spina bifida as I don't know a huge amount about that, but it seems that it is part of the blood tests done? in which case nothing to do with the scan.

So am pretty sure all the info you'd have been given at your scan would just be the normal info with nothing specific to either of those conditions.

Rachy1983 · 12/03/2012 19:43

great thank you for ur help :) i am now 27 weeks pregnant but was reminicing over the 20 wk scan with my partner :)

That's pretty normal for a good (communicative) sonographer. Most of mine have been like that.

beebee1978 · 12/03/2012 20:08

I requested to not know about the downs and Sonographer at 20 week scan never mentioned anything about baby apart from I needed to go back at 21weeks because of the position he was lying in she couldn't check his head. All was fine but I certainly didn't get any info apart from baby ok and measurements on notes.

shellywellybaby1 · 12/03/2012 22:04

Yeh my sonographer was like - yep theres ur baby, u want a pic? Haha. Very informative. Which i took to meant was good. The midwife then told me looked well when she checked my notes after the scan!
