Sorry as I know this has been done a thousand times before but can't search on iPhone.

I think I may have thrush could someone please explain what thrush is like so I can see if it's the same as I have now, and also what is safe to take. I am 24 weeks pregnant. Thanks :)

hi clandy thrush is when you are itchy and thick discharge like cottage cheese as some would describe but can also be alot of thin discharge as well. you will feel uncomfortable down there. I had it a few weeks ago was awful as i never get it normally but had an anti botic and it came from that.
GP give me cantestan cream as this is safe to take. the oral tablet is not safe to take when pregnant and GP would not give me pesserie as she has had an incident were a lady inserted too far up and put herself into labour as it stimulated her cervix to open :( GP said in later pregnancy when your 35 weeks + its ok to take pesserie as baby will be fine if you go into labour.
sorry for some random infomation just wanted to tell you all i know as i didnt have a clue what til do when i got it.

Hey clandy. I think we've had this discussion on the thread, so apologies if I'm repeating myself. Mine came from using antibiotics, like sam.

I had thrush and it was almost painful, like intense itching. There was some thicker discharge, but not in my knickers - more kind of stuck in the folds of down there!!

Tried the cream for a few days, but was still uncomfortable and we were about to go on hols. So I spoke to an on-call doctor and he said you can try putting the cream up inside your vagina (as that is where the infection can be harboured) or go for a pessary to really shift it. I went for the pessary, as wanted it got rid of before we were away. He said to put it in my hand and don't push too high.

Sorted!!

Oh, and you can buy all those things from the pharmacy, just don't bother telling them you're pregnant. Or a free prescription from GP. It was the weekend, and so I couldn't get an Rx. Popped down, chatted to the pharmacist and she refused to sell it to me!! Even though it was recommended by a doctor. So I went to another pharmacy across town and just bought it without any discussion!

Doh!! That was "put it in BY hand". Not in MY hand - wouldn't be nearly as effective!!!

Hotpotpie · 10/03/2012 21:05

Ive had it loads during my pregnancy and to be honest I tend to get a bit of a burn/itch but not so much of the discharge, ive just inserted the pessary by hand as well and made sure not to put it in to far - Just a word of warning though if you have it more than two or three times in quick succession make sure you mention it to your midwife, the obvious is that your not quite managing to treat it properly but Ive just found out that I may have gestational diabetes and it was spotted by my pharmasist when I went for my third treatment for thrush apparently it can be a warning sign

madaboutmadmen · 10/03/2012 21:08

if it turns out not to be thrush, could be piles Sad. I thought I had thrush but it wasn't. Can come on in early pregnancy as it is linked to hormones as well as pressure.

igggi · 11/03/2012 17:14

As long as you don't use the applicator provided I think you'd be struggling to push the pessary into your cervix - just be gentle.

heliumballoon · 11/03/2012 17:24

They can swab if there is any doubt whether it is thrush or not. If cream doesn't fix it, the pessary is fine if inserted carefully and had a quick effect on me. (thank god)

Thanks everyone Smile bought some cream and it seems to be helping!

I do remember now you have said princess! Gita terrible memory since having dd... God help me if it gets worse after dd2 Grin

Will get pessary if it doesn't get better tomorrow I think and put it up with by hand
(mine not yours thanks princess Grin)
