Morning sickness or gastritis?

I have had problems with gastritis on and off since I was 20 (I'm 30 now) and at various times have been prescribed omeprazole or similar proton pump inhibitors. Before I got pregnant, I had been taking it for a while but had then stopped taking it as I seemed better.

I am 9 weeks pregnant at the moment and feel bloated, sickly, gassy and sometimes have short lived stomach/upper abdominal pains quite a lot of the time. My stomach feels pretty acidic and gurgles almost constantly. I had put this down to morning sickness but it is getting more frequent and continuing throughout the day and in bed at night now.

How do you know whether symptoms like this are just morning sickness or my original problem? I know my GP will be reluctant to prescribe omeprazole while I'm pregnant anyway, so I don't want to waste a trip in if it is just morning sickness and therefore will pass without treatment (eventually!).

TBH it could be either... I have had gastritis / epigastric pains and now I try Gaviscon before I go to GP who are useless and don't help anyway

Sounds more like gastritis. Morning sickness doesn't tend to come from the stomach - it's like a constant gag feeling at the back of the throat, doesn't really include pain, bloating etc. Lots and lots of camomile tea and meadowsweet tea (if your morning sickness will let you!)

Just to contradict the previous poster, my morning sickness is very much in the stomach, plus I am gassy/bloated (which is no doubt caused by progesterone). It feels like I've got a really dodgy tummy - like I'm about to get diarrhoea. Also have heartburn-type feeling.

I think everyone has different symptoms

Morning sickness is more like sea sickness or the kind of nausea you get when you are very hungry. It shouldn't involve pain or an overly acidic feeling.

Hmm, it appears the answer is could be either! When I feel hungry my stomach does go very acidic so it sounds like it could tick either box. Also my gastritis is worse when I'm hungry which by many descriptions also seems to be the case for morning sickness. I have the gagging thing that cath mentions too but usually as a reaction to stuff - brushing my teeth, seeing something horrible on the pavement when I'm walking etc.

Gaviscon helped last night for all of about 10 minutes but I might get a jumbo bottle and see if helps a bit more.

Thanks all Smile
