First time pregnant, approx 5 weeks and panicking – what to expect? HELP!!!

Rewind to the middle of Jan, my DP and I had a wonderful conversation where we agreed to stop using any source of contraception and take each day as it comes (us both secretly hoping for a baby!) fast forward to present and as I sit here typing and am happy to say I am now approx. 5 weeks pregnant. (According to 7 pregnancy tests!!)

We haven?t told a soul yet other than my GP so I?ve spent every living spare second I have scouring the internet for info relating to being 5 weeks pregnant. I have no close friends or family that have yet been pregnant so looking to mumsnet for some much needed help!!

I haven?t had any morning sickness, nor have my nipples changed shape/colour. Mood swings were horrendous a few weeks ago but now seems to have settled Is this normal? Confused The only symptom that seems to have remained is my huge and heavy boobs! What should I be expecting? I?m almost praying for morning sickness so I can at least start to feel pregnant!

I have an appointment with the MD arranged for tomorrow (7/3) however I?m not letting myself get excited as I know she won?t be able to tell me much, or will she??? As I am only going off what I?ve read on the internet!

Any form of advice/help/words of experience would be appreciated more than ever. I?m going out of my mind with worry and anxiety!! I know the 7 tests said positive but i just don't feel it yet!

thanks in advance! :)

Expect a baby in about 8 months Grin

All sorts of symptoms are normal with pregnancy including... no symptoms. Admit it is spooky though... I am currently in same boat but feels extra odd as my first pregnancy was classic - sickness, tired, constant piddling etc - but this time round I am not even needing to pee more often and I am 8 weeks now.

The colour change thing comes later on ime

Enjoy it while it lasts though as you will feel pregnant soon enough!! You may get more symptoms later on like heartburn when your dinner has nowhere to go - then you will look back and laugh! Grin

In the meantime, your sesame seed sized baby will be growing well.

Have a nosey at www.babycentre.co.uk/ if you want to indulge in some pregnancy facts and just wallow in information for a while.

I totally know where you are coming from, I had no symptoms at all up until 7.5 weeks and I was driving myself and DH crazy. However I should have been careful what I wished for as bam! 7+5 morning sickness hit me like a train!

Have you read on the NHS website about things you shouldn't eat in pregnancy, and things you shouldn't do eg change cat litter, some sports, go in a jacuzzi, have baths which are very hot? I ordered books off Amazon as soon as I found out I was pregnant and have been reading them pretty much daily! I love the Rough Guide to Pregnancy, What to Expect When You're Expecting is good but a bit dry for me.

Also do you have a smartphone? The baby centre and baby bump apps are good.

I have had my booking in appointment with my midwife and yes to be honest I think you may be wise not to get too excited about the appointment- our midwife was a miserable so-and-so and it was obvious we were just another set of forms to fill in for her! Hopefully however yours will be much nicer.

I hope your appointment goes well.

Congratulations!

if you're not taking a folic acid supplement or an antenatal vitamin supplement, get thee down to Boots and buy a bumper pack, sharpish. you MUST take folic acid (antenatal supplements include folic acid so if you're taking one of those, that's enough) because it helps prevent v serious birth defects. it also has a miscarriage-prevention aspect but that's secondary to the prevention of birth defects.

most people who have morning sickness only start having it at 6-8 weeks, so don't worry about that yet.

i'm 11/12ish weeks and my nips are still the same size/colour. that comes quite a bit later. your boobs will be soreish/swollen-feeling though, that's normal.

i felt incredibly hungry until 8ish weeks, which is when i developed nausea. everyone is different though. i have been deathly thirsty day and night without a moment's break since i conceived though! i hope you don't have that! you do need to drink more water when pg, but just follow your body, you'll know when you need more water.

if you start to feel sick, i advise sticking to easy-to-digest foods, and eating much more often. lots of times, the nausea is due to low blood sugar. your digestion rate changes when pg, you usually need smaller meals, more often.

May your pregnancy be long and boring!

Hi Zippy. You're not alone! I'm pregnant for the first time, 5 weeks yesterday and it is on my mind pretty much every waking moment. No sickness yet either (though unlike you, I'm praying it stays that way!) I've found this forum very helpful, apps for the iPhone and I've ordered a couple of books on recommendation. I've seen the doctor and am now waiting for the midwife to get in touch with me for my first appointment. I'm really hoping it won't be left until the dating scan is due!

I hope everything goes well for you :-)

I'm also 5 weeks, 6 weeks from Tuesday. I was feling very very tired a few weeks ago before I realised i was pregnant, that has seemed to ease a little for now but headaches are quite common at the minute but no sickness yet but i do seem to smell things alot stronger - even upstairs i can smell something in the kitchen which is all the way down the stairs and through the living room!
Have fun! :/ freaky times lol

ItWasThePenguins · 09/03/2012 16:39

Apart from being really tired, having really heavy boobs, and a little emotional/teary mood swings.. I had no symptoms of pregnancy until about 16weeks when I was showing.
Expect -nothing- very little to happen for now.. it's all hidden away.
