So I'm about 5 weeks just found out but it's just occurred to me - when I had DD I was a healthy weight yet I didn't actually start to look of until about 20 weeks. not with dc2 I am overweight carrying quite a bit round my tummy area. So I've been thinking , what happens to the fat when baby grows ? And when will my tummy stop looking fat and start looking pg ?

It depends on your build, fat distribution, and where the baby is lying. Your midwife will measure and feel your abdomen to see if you are progressing normally, and she is probably the best person to talk to about it all. Second pregnancies often show earlier than first as muscle tone is often lost in the abdominal region I think. If you look at pregnancy week by week websites or books, you should get an idea of how the baby will grow and how the baby, plus the fluid around him or her, will start to make your uterus swell and push your tummy forward.

My slim friend is twelve weeks with second pg and has suddenly sprouted a noticeable bump. My heavier friend is 15 weeks with her second and just looks fuller round the middle. It really varies. Congratulations n your pregnancy.

I had a thicker waist almost straight away, I'm normally a size 10 so it was really obvious! I'm now 15 weeks and it depends what I'm wearing but I've had a more obvious bump for a week or so.

Every woman, every pregnancy is different.

Im 33 weeks, with DC2, and very often dont look PG at all. (Had serious bump envy for my fellow NCT Antenatal-ers this weekend, funnily enough, they were more jealous of my ability to still put my own shoes on! Grin )

Its not because im overweight or anything, just the way I seem to carry. If i wear something tight, i look a bit more PG, but definately not my full 33wks!

My friend (due after me) has been looking obviously PG since before I even went public.

Its just one of those things! :)

It varies so much. I am one of those people who shows a lot, v early - I think I have all the factors for this - I have a bit of a tummy anyway (but thin-ish elsewhere), I am short, and I have a short torso.

I am 14 weeks now (DC2) and I would say at times I look about 20 weeks +

I was the same with DS - when I was about 30 weeks a lady asked me if I was SURE I had my dates right and had I had a scan! I looked ready to pop by then... IMO I looked like I was carrying twins. DS was big (although not huge).

There are probably lots of other factors too... i.e. not just tall/short, curvy/slim, big/small baby - amount of water, size of placenta etc.

I think the difference between looking fat and pregnant (after about 16 weeks or so) is probably mostly down to what clothes you wear - maternity clothes can make you look more pregnant than fat, normal clothes visa versa.
