I have self diagnosed a uti - been up for third night in a row with all the usual syptoms and will make an emergency appt to see my gp tomorrow (or ring midwife?) to get antibiotics hopefully - this is my first pregnancy and i'm now starting to go a bit bonkers through lack of sleep because I am literally sitting on the loo every 5 minutes. Anything I can do at home to alleviate the situation - I haven't taken any paracetemol yet because the pain is not that bad - its the constant need to go that is driving me nuts - would have inserted confused smiley face but this is the first time I have posted anything so I don't know how to do it!

Cranberry juice and lots and lots of water. Last time I had one taking the paracetamol did help me to sleep.
Glad it's not being too hurty.

Oh and a hot water bottle held against your lower tummy.

surfmama · 05/03/2012 01:04

horrid for you. lots water warmed a bit. cranberry capsules get from boots in morning. point on both feet called solar plexsus, look it up on google as hard to explain, under side of foot, under pad, locate betweeen second and third toe and circle with gentle pressure, if you can get to feet that is. feel better soon.

Thank you - have been avoiding liquid in the evening which doesn't seem to have made the slightest bit of difference so just had a glass of water and two paracetemol, kettle on to fill up hot water bottle then I'm going to go back to bed and read until I either fall asleep or its time to phone the drs!! Thanks again

Don't avoid liquid. You need to drink loads to flush the infection out.

Cranberry juice helps as has been suggested also.

Like everyone else has said......plenty of water/cranberry juice. But make sure it's a juice with a high % of cranberry. Ocean spray was the best I found. Oh and don't go overboard on it. I discovered too much has a laxative effect! Lol

Also if you have a high temp (I sweated buckets) couple of paracetamol just to keep that down won't hurt

Lemon juice and hot water to relieve stinging. Lots of fluid, hope you feel better!

Try to see your gp today. Say you are PG when making call - this usually gets you seen more quickly.

You can get sachets at pharmacy - cystopurin or something like that. That can help neutralise the alkaline nature of your wee which is what causes the stinging. I have every sympathy - its just horrid.

Hope you're feeling better. Actually you should avoid cranberry juice/ lemon etc while you actually have an infection (they're more designed to prevent them occurring) as their acidity will make the symptoms worse. Same goes for caffeine.

Drink plenty of water or non-caffeinated hot drinks, and like people have said, a hot water bottle & hot baths can help (as long as they don't dehydrate you). It's really important to get diagnosed/ treated asap as the infection can spread from being a UTI to the kidneys, which is much worse and can take a long time to clear up. The cystitis remedies at the chemist may help with the PH levels, but won't actually cure a UTI. Take care!

Robinson's lemon barley squash is excellent. I've been drinking it by the pint as it not only flushes out the infection but neutralises the acid in your urine (it's alkali)
and so its not as uncomfortable when you wee.

Hope you feel better soon.
