Am I losing my baby?

I am 5+2 and having cramps and brown spotting Sad This has been happening on and off since Friday afternoon. I have had an mmc in the past, but have since had a normal pregnancy. I did have some bleeding at 8 weeks when pg with my son but I didn't really have the cramps and the bleeding stopped after a couple of hours. Have no idea how to feel. I rang GAU on Saturday and was told they would scan me in a fortnight and I had to retake my pregnancy test before I go. The spotting is very light and isn't every time I wipe but it keeps coming back. Just want to cry. Would really welcome any experiences and/or advice :)

If the spotting is brown and very light it does sound more like old blood than fresh blood. But I guess in the end it is really hard to know, and horrible to have to wait to find out how things are. I know a significant number of people who have bled in early pregnancy and gone on to be absolutely fine, but obviously it isn't the case for everyone either. So that's not very helpful....would a very un-mumsnetty hug help?

A hug is lovely thanks pootlebug :) It definitely does seem like old blood - very much brown rather than red. I think it's the cramping that's bothering me more. I know I did have some crampy pains early on last time and was told it was just my uterus stretching. These seem more intense though (from my dim recollection) but i'd have thought it'd stretch less second time round. Oh God I'm going to go insane in the next fortnight!

I had this with my ds. I wouldn;t wait that long tbh, I'd pop to your GP and ask them to take your hgc level (I think hat's right...) and then take it again a few days after that. It's a very simple blood test that will easily show if there's a problem. There wasn't with me, and tbh I've had similar in all my pregnancies. Hard not to worry though

Hey, I had some implantation bleeding (I think that's what it was) for a few days around the time my normal period would have been due. Was very light and pinkish brown. I thought it may be my period at first (since was accompanied by the usual PMS symptoms, including cramps), but not normal for it to be so short and light.... and I was already suspecting being pregnant due to morning sickness! So maybe that is what this is?? I'm 16 weeks on now and all is going absolutely fine, no more spotting. Def go see your GP if the bleeding persists though. Implantation bleeding doesn't usually last too long.

I agree with fuckity, your GP can check your hormone levels. I had an early miscarriage almost a year ago, for me my pregnancy tests got lighter not darker (over the space of a week) to the point I got a negative and started bleeding.

It was bright red blood from the off, the cramping came later when the majority of the loss occurred, my symptoms by that point had vanished and I just knew it was over.

There is a stupid amount of stretching and cramping in early pregnancy and bleeding in successful pregnancies is very common, so try to keep positive, I am 35 weeks now with DC4, I sincerely hope it works out for you sending you big hugs xxx

I've had bleeding at 5 weeks which was a MC and bleeding at 7 weeks which was not. The bleeding at 7 weeks was similar to what you described and it was due to low progesterone and I was given tablets. However as a scan will not show a heartbeat at 5 weeks I think you will have to wait a bit. However I believe a successful pregnancy will have increasing hcg levels which will increase so I am surprised you have not been offered a blood test. With my MC I was given blood tests 2 days apart, but unfortunately the bleeding increased a lot before I had the results so I knew I had lost it. I would ask for a blood test if I were you.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, it really helps a lot. I bloody love Mumsnet! I think I will try and make an appointment at my GP tomorrow. I just think I'm going to go crazy if I just wait and see. Might try taking another test in the morning too, my first one was very dark at 4+3 and came up before the test line. Will try to stay positive.

I had really bad cramps at 5 weeks 4-7 weeks actually and everything turned out ok Smile I think brown spotting is quite normal as it is considered old blood - nice hey lol when it's red fresh blood it's more serious. I would go to your early pregnancy hospital they will scan you internally. I had this at 5 and 7 weeks because of my cramps it's uncomfortable but necessary. At 5 weeks as all they could see was the sack in the right place - so don't panic if there's no heartbeat. When I went back at 7 weeks there was a clear heartbeat.
Try not to panic - (yeah right) your symptoms do not mean your loosing your baby. I hope everything turns out ok for you. It's such a horrible stressful worrying time!
Xxx

Thanks Hayley that's reassuring. Will try to sort something out today. Day says to just leave it and wait but I just don't think I can.

With each of my 3 pregnancies, I bled around the time my period was due. We were trying really hard to conceive and I was always pissed off because I presumed it was my period coming. Once it was bright red fresh blood too. I went on to have healthy pregnancies.

BettyDrapersWardrobeElf · 01/03/2012 12:35

Just a quick update - been to docs, she didn't do blood tests but has signed me off until my scan on the 14th which is reassuring. Am lying on the sofa with my feet up cos at the moment as soon as I do anything vaguely physical the bleeding comes back. It has progressed to very watery red blood every now and again with brown spotting in between. Not feeling very positive but want to do everything I can. Bit bored already and dreading another fortnight of this! Thanks for all the responses.
