Early scan

Hi all,

I am just after a bit of advice please.

I am currently 7+5 and me and my husband have been looking into having an early scan privately. I was wondering if anyone else had had one, not for medical reasons but through excitement of wanting to see the little bean and check that all is as it should be? I am due to have my booking in appointment next week, if I had a scan before then, would the midwife take this as a dating scan and not book me in for a 12w?

Thanks for any help.

I am 7+3 and booked in for an early scan on Wednesday. We are getting ours done on the NHS as we were having fertility treatment. We will also be having the 12 week scan as well but that's because I was having fertility treatment at a different hospital in a different PCT.

I am so glad that we are having an early scan as to be honest I am beside myself with fear that something isn't right- I have no symptoms at all Sad. But as Thunderbolt says, I'm equally aware that even with an early scan, its no guarantee that there won't be a problem further down the line.

I had a private scan at 7 weeks because I was going away and wanted reassurance its not ectopic. the little bean measured 6mm and the scan didn't show very much, but the sonographer saw heartbeats and we got the reassurance that it's not ectopic, so we think it's money well spent. Bean was around 60mm at 12 week scan and it's more interesting, could see his/her little feet kicking about!

Thank you for your replies, they have been very helpful!

I will look into having one done, will it be an internal scan or ultrasound?

Hi - I had an early scan at the weekend with Baby Premier who I would recommend - they were also cheaper than others I looked at! I am 10 weeks and it was an ultrasound - however they discovered I'd lost a twin (pregnancy had begun as twins) at about 6 weeks and for that level of detail they needed to do an internal scan. I still have my 12 week NHS scan booked in next week as normal - any private scans you opt for are in addition to the ones you get on NHS. Congrats and good luck! x

My early scan at 8 weeks was internal, but this was due to the fact I have a retroverted uterus. They try & do it externally & only do internally If not getting a good picture.

beckyboo232 · 27/02/2012 14:00

My 8 week scan was internal due to bleeding they couldn't get a clear picture externally. This was done by NHS to see what was happening as I was losing a lot of blood. They saw a heart beat but the 12 weeks scan was much clearer-very exciting though as the others have said they can see a heartbeat at 7 but it's not until 12 weeks that they say the risk of mc etc is reduced. Good luck Smile

resipsa · 27/02/2012 14:16

I'd definitely recommend an early, private scan. When I was pregnant with my first, I almost didn't believe it as there was nothing to see externally. I had a scan at 9 weeks and as soon as the sonographer applied the probe, we heard the whoosh-whoosh of the heartbeat. MAGIC! Hubby cried!
This time around, I've just had another scan, internal this time, at 6+6 cause I had some bleeding which didn't seem to worry the GP, midwife or EPU but did worry me. No heartbeat heard and a kink in the sac (collapse imminent?) plus growth suggesting 6 weeks instead of (nearly)7 leads me to believe it's lost already but I have to go back next week to find out for sure. There is no way I could have waited to week 12/13.

Hi accol, I had one done at 8 weeks with my DD at FMC and it was great, we were so pleased with it, I was going mad thinking I had to wait til 12 weeks! Have just booked in for one with this pregnancy too. They do see lots of people who are just going in for reassurance.

Mine was external last time, am very much hoping they'll be able to do the same this time!

accol · 27/02/2012 17:17

Thank you all so much. I think I may be booking one myself today from all of your stories!

resipsa I hope everything is ok.

Hello everyone!

Just an update to say i had my early scan today (at 7.5 weeks) and everyhting looks great! The baby is measuring over 7 weeks and there was a heartbeat! I am so so so happy.

I thought that we wouldn't be able to see much with it being so early but by doing an internal we were able to see a really clear picture.

rrrayray · 29/02/2012 13:35

Congratulations. All the best for the rest of your pregnancy x

funchum8am · 29/02/2012 18:16

Just be aware that if it is bad news they don't normally have separate waiting rooms for those who are sat there waiting for their happy bean photos to be printed off etc - I had an MC confirmed at a private scan as the NHS couldn't see me for three days and sitting in the waiting room beforehand with all these happy people who had had lovely news was just awful (and I think DH and I being tearful didn't exactly make their day either!)

Now 10+5 again and hoping my next scan will be more positive!
