First Time Mother in a bit of a panic! I suffer from ichy, painful scalp and have found the only thing that seems to help is this coal tar shampoo. I don;t use masses of it, so a bottle takes a long time to get through. On taking the new bottle out of the box, I notice a warning not to use during pregnancy! Of course I am now freaking out (am 14+3) as I have used this 3 or 4 times a week throughout my pregnancy. I will stop using it, and talk to the midwife next week when I see her, but does anyone have any advice on alternitives and if I have done this poor baby any harm? Thank you.

It's highly unlikely to have done any harm.

According to my googling it is ok to use after the first three months of pregnancy. Probably it isn't recommended during the first three months because of a lack of studies.

Ask your midwife for advice but don't panic in the meantime.

I'm afraid I don't have an answer, although I think there is something about the tar. I would suggest that you phone nhs direct or pop and ask a pharmacist to make sure that you get proper medical advice.

This site says there are no known side effects.

Really? Never noticed that. Used it through 2 pregnancies, the kids seem ok! It's unlikely to have done any harm, but no harm in cutting it out from now.

Hi, i also had the same onc ei got pregnant, couldnt stop itching before that id always been fine. so i started using the coal tar shampoo as id done when i was a kid and mentioned it to the doctor who gave me an alternative instead (which i actually found helped more than the coal tar) it begins with a n and sounds something like nezoprelene (but dont quote me!).

Would be worth getting a bottle to try, i doubt you've done any damage so dont worry about that.
