maternity leave and tax credits

Hi
Does anyone know if you can call tax credits once you have gone on maternity leave and tell them that your income has dropped?
I will be going at the end of may so it works out that I only work 2 months out of the new tax year, then the rest is just smp so I can easily work out what my yearly wage for 2012-2013 is and it is a big drop so surely I would get more tax credits once I start maternity as my 2013 p60 is only going to be yearly earnings of around £2500!
Thanks

Do you have children already? If not then it won't make any difference. If you do, then yes call them but remember to disregard £100 for every week of SMP.

yes I have 2 already, It means I only earn 2 months of £600 per month for April and May this year then 40 weeks at £28 after deductions! so thought i may be entitled to a alittle more during this period, thanks

yes you can i did this with my last child and calculated what i would earn in that year, it means your money is right and you will get any extra, if your dp/Dh is not on loads it could make a big difference. its such a shame the baby element is not there anymore:(

I've Just done a tax credits calculator and it should really help with only getting £128 per week smp, I never did it with my last child and because I didnt realise we had to take a 6 month mortgage break to make ends meet!
Thank you :)
